TheWritingoftheBookItisfittingthatMissKellers"StoryofMyLife"shouldappearatthistime.Whatisremarkableinhercareerisalreadyaplished,andwhatevershemaydoiurewillbebutarelativelyslightadditiontothesuccesswhichdistinguisheshernow.Thatsuccesshasjustbeenassured,foritisherworkatRadcliffeduritwoyearswhichhasshownthatshecarryhereducationasfarasifshewerestudyingundernormalditions.WhateverdoubtsMissKellerherselfmayhavehadarenowatrest.
Severalpassagesofherautobiography,asitappearedinserialform,havebeehesubjectofagraveeditorialinaBostonneer,inwhichthewriterregrettedMissKellersapparentdisillusioinregardtothevalueofhercollegelife.Hequotedthepassagesinwhichsheexplainsthatcollegeisnotthe"universalAthens"shehadhopedtofind,andcitedthecasesofotherremarkablepersonswhosecollegelifehadproveddisappointing.ButitistoberememberedthatMissKellerhaswrittenmanythingsiobiographyforthefunofwritingthem,andthedisillusion,whichthewriteroftheeditorialtookseriously,isiparthumorous.MissKellerdoesnotsupposeherviewstobeofgreatimportandwheersheropinionsonimportantmattersshetakesitfrahatherreaderwillreceivethemastheopinionsofajuniorincollege,notofonewhowriteswiththewisdomofmaturity.ForinstasurprisedherthatsomepeoplewereawhatshesaidabouttheBible,andshewasamusedthattheydidnotsee,whatlainenough,thatshehadbeenobligedtoreadthewholeBibleinacourseinEnglishliterature,notasareligiousdutyputuponherbyherteacherorherparents.
IoughttoapologizetothereaderandtoMissKellerforpresumingtosaywhathersubjectmatterisworth,butonemoreexplanationisnecessary.InheratofherearlyeduissKellerisnotgivingastificallyaccuraterecordofherlife,norevenoftheimportas.Sheotknowiailhowshewastaught,andhermemoryofherchildhoodisinsomecasesanidealizedmemoryofwhatshehaslearerfromherteacherandothers.Sheislessabletorecalleventsoffifteenyearsagothanmostofusaretorecollectourchildhood.ThatiswhyherteachersreaybefoundtodifferiicularsfromMissKellersat.
ThewayinwhichMissKellerwroteherstoryshows,asnothingelseshow,thedifficultiesshehadtoovere.rite,wegobackoverourwork,shufflethepages,interline,rearrange,seehowtheparagraphslookinproof,andsostructthewholeworkbeforetheeye,asanarchitestructshisplans.
WhenMissKellerputsherworkitenform,sheotrefertoitagainunlesssomeonereadsittoherbymeansofthemanualalphabet.
Thisdifficultyisinpartobviatedbytheuseofherbraillemae,whichmakesamanuscriptthatsheread;butasherworkmustbeputultimatelyitenform,andasabraillemaeissomewhatcumbersome,shehasgotintothehabitofwritingdirectlyoypewriter.Shedependssolittleonherbraillemanuscript,that,whenshebegantowriteherstorymorethanayearagoandhadputinbrailleahundredpagesofmaterialandnotes,shemadethemistakeofdestroyingthesenotesbeforeshehadfinishedhermanuscript.Thussheuchofherstoryoypewriter,andinstrugitasawholedependedonhermemuideherinputtingtogetherthedetachedepisodes,whichMissSullivanreadovertoher.
LastJuly,whenshehadfinishedundergreatpressureofworkherfinalchapter,shesettoworktorewritethewholestory.Hergoodfriend,Mr.WilliamWade,hadapletebrailleadeforherfromthemagazineproofs.Thenforthefirsttimeshehadherwholemanuscriptunderherfionce.Shesawimperfesinthearraraphsandtherepetitionofphrases.Shesaw,too,thatherstoryproperlyfellintoshortchaptersandredividedit.
