  "Goodidea,"saidScrubb.Butittookthemquitealongtimetofihershandsinthedarkhedogsweresniffingattheothersideofthebarriernow.

  "Tryifwestandup,"suggestedScrubb.Theydidandfoundthattheycould.Then,PuddleglumholdingoutahandbehindhimtoScrubb,andScrubbholdingahandoutbehindhimtoJill(whowishedverymuchthatshewasthemiddleohepartyandnotthelast),theybegangropingwiththeirfeetandstumblingforwardsintotheblaess.Itwasallloosestonesunderfoot.ThenPuddleglumcameuptoawallofrock.

  Theyturnedalittletotheirrightaon.Therewereagoodmanymoretwistsand

  turns.Jillhadnownosenseofdireatall,andnoideawherethemouthofthecavelay.

  "Thequestionis,"camePuddleglumsvoiceoutofthedarknessahead,"whether,takihingwithawouldertogoback(ifwe)andgivethegiantsatreatatthatfeastoftheirs,insteadoflosingourwayisofahillwhere,tentooheresdragonsanddeepholesandgasesandwaterand-Ow!Letgo!Saveyourselves.

  Yetsomehowtheywerent.Theywereamassofbruises,astickystuffonherfaceappearedtobeblood.Andsuchamassoflooseearth,shingle,andlargerstonesileduproundher(andpartlyoverher)thatshecouldup.Thedarknesswassopletethatitmadenodiffereallwhetheryouhadyoureyesopenorshut.Therewasnonoise.AndthatwastheveryworstmomentJillhadeverknowninherlife.
