Therearetwokindsofpeople,however:thosewhoknowthisasafadthosewhodont--thisistheonlydifference.
Insleepwereachthesameplacewedoiation.
Theonlydifferehatinsleepweareunscious,whileiationwearefullyscious.
Ifsomeoobeefullyaware,eveninhissleep,hewouldhavethesameexperienceasiation.
Forexample,ifweweretoputapersonunderahetidinhisunsciousstatebringhimonastretchertoagardenwhereflowersareinfullbloom,wherefragranceisintheair,wherethesunisshiningandthebirdsaresinging,themanwouldbepletelyunawareofallthis.
Afterwebroughthimbadhewasoutoftheahesia,ifweaskedhimhowhelikedthegarden,hewouldnotbeabletotellusanything.
Then,ifyouweretotakehimtothesamegardenwhenhewasfullyscious,hewouldexperienceeverythitherewhenhehadbeenbroughtinbefore.
Inbothcases,althoughthemanwasbroughttothesameplace,hewasunawareofthebeautifulsurroundingsinthefirstinstance,whileinthesedinstancehewouldbefullyawareoftheflowers,thefragrahesongofthebirds,therisingsun.
Soalthoughyouwillundoubtedlyreachasfarinanunsciousstateasyouwillreaasciousstate,toreaeplaanunsciousstateisasgoodasnotreagthereatall.
Insleepwereachthesameparadisewereameditation,butweareunawareofit.
Eaightwetraveltothisparadise,andthenweeback--unaware.
Althoughthefreshbreezeandthelovelyfragraheplacetouchus,andthesongsofthebirdsringinourears,weareneverawareofit.

Ifeelverypeaceful.
Isleptwelllastnight.

Whatdoyoufeelsogoodabout?Haviwell,whatgoodhappeotbeonlybecauseyouslept--surelyyoumusthavebeensomewhere;somethingmusthavehappeoyou.
Butinthemyouhavenoknowledgeofit,exceptfueideaoffeelinggood.
Onewhohashadadeepsleepatnightgetsuprefreshedinthem.
Thisshowsthepersonhasreachedarejuvenatingsoursleep--butinanunsciousstate.
Onewhoisuosleepwellatnightfindshimselfmoretiredinthemthahepreviousevening.
Andifapersosleepwellforafewdaysitbeesdifficultforhimtosurvive,becausehisewiththesourceoflifeisbroken.
Heisuoreachtheplaceitisessentialheshould.
Theworstpunishmentintheworldish--asapunishmehiseasy;itoccursinafewmoments.
Theworstpunishmenteverdevisedohisingapersongotosleep.
Eventothisday,therearetrieslikeaandRussiawhereprisonersaremadetogowithoutsleep.
Thetortureaprisoesthrough,ifheisnotallowedtosleepforfifteendays,isbeyondination--healmostgoesmad.
Hebeginstodivulgealltheinformatioherwisewouldnothavelettheenemyknow.
Hebeginstoblabber,totallyunawareofitsimplications.
Ina,systematicmethodshavebeendevised.
Forsixmonthsprisonersarenotallowedtosleep.

Theypletelyfetwhotheyare,whattheirnamesare,whattheirreligionis,whichtownorcitytheyefrom,whattheirtryis--theyfeteverything.
Lackofsleepthrowstheirsciousnessintopletedisorder,intochaos.
Inthatditiontheybemadetolearnanything.
WhentheAmerisoldierscapturediurnedfromtheprisoncampsofRussiaanda,denialofsleephadlefttheminsuchterribleshapethatwhentheycameouttheywereopenlyantagonistieridinfavorofunism.
Firstthesesoldierswerenotallowedtosleep,aheirsciousnessesbecamedisordered,theywereindoatedintounism.
Oheiridentitieswerethrownintochaos,throughrepeatedsuggestionstheyweretoldtheywereunists.
Sobeforetheirreleasetheywerepletelybrainwashed.
Lookingatthesesoldiers,Ameripsychologistsweredumbfounded.
Ifapersonisdeniedsleep,hebeescutofffromtheverysourceoflife.

HowintheworldarestlessandtroubledmindbereceptivetoGod?Amindwhichisdisturbed,dissatisfied,tenseandangry,refusestoacceptGod,denieshisexistence.
Sotatthebottomoftheincreasingatheismi;thedisorderly,chaotiditionofsleepisattherootofit.
InNewYork,atleastthirtypertofthepeopleotsleepwithouttranquilizers.
Psychologistsbelievethatifthisditionprevailsforthehundredyears,notasinglepersonwillbeabletosleepwithoutmedication.
Peoplehavepletelylostsleep.
Ifamanwhohaslostsleepweretoaskyouhowyougotosleep,andyouranswerwere,"AllIdoisputmyheadonthepillowandfallasleep,"hewillnotbelieveyou.

Iamdrawingyourattentiontoallofthisbecausethreeorfourthousandyearsagopeoplewouldclosetheireyesandgoiationaseasilyasyougotosleeptoday.
TwothousandyearsfromnowitwillbedifficulttosleepinNewYork--itisdifficulteventoday.
ItisbeingdifficulttosleepinBombay,andsoonitwillbeedifficultinDwarkaaswell--itisjustamatteroftime.
Todayitishardtobelievetherewasatimewhenamancouldclosehiseyesandgoiation--becausenow,whenyousitwithyoureyesclosed,youreaowhere;ihoughtskeepharoundandyouremainwhereyouare.
I,meditationwasaseasyforthosewhowereclosetonatureassleepisforthosewholiveclosetonature.
Firstmeditationdisappeared;nowsleepisonitswayout.
Thosethingsarefirstlostwhicharescious;afterthat,thosethingsarelostwhichareunscious.
Withthedisappearaneditationtheworldhasalmostbeeirreligious,andwhensleepdisappearstheworldwillbeetotallyirreligious.
Thereisnohopefioninasleeplessworld.
Youwillnotbelievehowclosely,howdeeply,weareectedtosleep.
Hoersonwilllivehislifedependstotallyonhowhesleeps.
Ifhedoesnotsleepwell,hisentirelifewillbeachaos:allhisrelationshipswillbeeentangled,everythingwillbeepoisonous,filledwithrage.
If,orary,apersonsleepsdeeply,therewillbefreshnessinhislife--peadjoywilltinuouslyflowinhislife.
Underlyinghisrelationships,hislove,everythingelse,therewillbeserenity.
Butifhelosessleep,allhisrelationshipswillgohaywire.
Hewillhaveamessed-uplifewithhisfamily,hiswife,hisson,hismother,hisfather,histeacher,hisstudents--allofthem.
SleepbringsustoapointinourunsciouswhereweareimmersedinGod--althoughnotfortoolong.
Eventhehealthiestpersononlyreachestohisdeeperlevelfortenminutesofhisnightlyeighthourssleep.
Forthesetenminutesheissopletelylost,drownedihatnotevenadreamexists.
Sleepisnottotalaslongasoneisdreaming--onekeepsmoviweeesofsleepandwakefulness.
Dreamingisastateinwhieishalf-asleepandhalf-awake.
Tobeinadreammeansthateventhoughyoureyesareclosed,youarenotasleep;externalinfluencesarestillaffegyou.
Thepeopleyoumetduringtheday,youarestillwiththematnightinyourdreams.
Dreamsoccupythemiddlestatebetweensleepandwakefulness.
Andtherearemanypeoplewhohavelostsleep--theymerelyremaininthedreamingstate,withouteverreagthestateofsleep.
Andthatyoudontrememberinthemthatyoudreamtallnightisbesidethepoint.
MuchresearsleepisbeingcarriedoutinAmerica.
Sometenbiglaboratorieshavebeenexperimentingonthousandsofpeopleforabouteighttotenyears.
Amerisareshowingiiationbecausetheyhavelostsleep.
Theythinkthatperhapsmeditationmaybringtheirsleepback,thatitmaybringsomepeatotheirlives.
Thatswhytheylookupoationasnothingmorethanatranquilizer.
WhenVivekanandafirstintroducedmeditationinAmerica,aphysicametohimandsaid,"Ienjoyedyourmeditationimmensely.
Itisabsolutelyanon-medialtranquilizer.
Itsnotamedieaputsoosleep--itsgreat.
"YogisarenotthereasontheirinfluenceisgrowingsomuAmerica--thelackofsleepistherealcause.
Theirsleepisinamess,andsequentlylifeinAmericaisfilledwithheaviness,depression,tension.
SoinAmericaweseethegrowingneedfortranquilizers--somehow,tsleeptopeople.
Everyyear,millionsofdollarsarebeiontranquilizersinAmerica.
Tenbiglaboratoriesaredugresearthousandsofpeoplewhoarebeingpaidtoundergonightsofratherunfortable,painfulsleep.
Allkindsofelectrodesandthousandsofwiresareattachedtopeoplesbodies,andtheyareexaminedfromallaofindoutwhatishappeningihem.
Oneincrediblediscoverytheseexperimentshaverevealedisthatmandreamsalmostthewholenight.
Wakingup,somepeoplesaidtheydidntdream,whilesomesaidtheydid.
Butinfact,allofthemdreamt.
Theonlydifferehatthosewithbettermemoriesremembereddreaming,whilethosewithweakermemoriescouldnotrecalldreaming.
Itwasfound,however,thatapletelyhealthypersonwasabletoslipintoadeep,dreamlesssleepfortenminutes.
Dreamsbesedthroughmaes.
hebrainremainactiveduringourdreamingstate,butasthedreamstops,thenervesceasetobeactiveaswell,andthemaeindicatesagaphasoccurred.
Thegapshowsthatatthattimethemanwasherdreamingnorthinking--hewaslostsomewhere.
Itisiingthatthemaeskeeprecmovementihemanwhileheisinthedreamingstate,butassoonashefallsintodreamlesssleep,themaesho.
Theydontknowwherethemandisappearedinthatgap.
Sodreamlesssleepmeansthemanhasreachedaplacebeyondthemaesrange.
Itisinthisgapthatmahedivine.
Themaeisuodetectthisspabetween,thisgap.
Themaerecordstheinternalactivityaslongasthemanisdreaming--thehegapandthemandisappearssomewhere.
Andthen,aftertenmihemaestartsrecagain.
Itisdifficulttosaywherethemanwasduringthatten-mierval.
Ameripsychologistsareveryintriguedbythisgap;heheysidersleepthebiggestmystery.
ThefactisthatoGod,sleepistheonlymystery.
Thereisnoothermystery.
Yousleepeveryday,yetyouhavenoideawhatsleepis.
Amansleepsallthroughhislife,ahingges--heknowsnothingaboutsleep.
Thereasonyoudontknowanythingaboutsleepisthatwhehere,youarenot.
Remember,youareonlyaslongassleepisnot.
Andso,youetoknowonlyasmuchasthemaeknows.
Justasinthefaceofthegapthemaestopsandisuoreachwherethemanhasbeentransported,youotreachthereeither--becauseyouarenomorethanamaeaswell.
Sinceyoudonoteacrossthatgapeither,sleepremainsamystery;itremainsbeyondyourreach.
Thisissobecauseamanfallsintowakelesssleeponlywhenheceasestoexistinhis"I-am-ness.
"Andtherefore,astheegokeepsgrowing,sleepbeeslessandless.
Anegoisticpersonloseshiscapacitytosleepbecausehisego,theI,keepsassertingitselftwenty-fourhoursaday.
ItistheIthatwakesup,thesameIthatwalksoreet.
TheIremainssopreseiretwenty-fourhoursthatatthemomentoffallingasleep,wheimeapproachestodroptheI,oneisuogetridofit.
Obviously,itbeesdifficulttofallasleep.
AslongastheIexists,sleepisimpossible.
And,asItoldyouyesterday,aslongastheIexists,enteringintoGodisimpossible.
EnteringintosleepaeringintoGodareexactlyohesamething;theonlydifferehatthroughsleepoersintoGodinanunsciousstate,whilethroughmeditatioersintoGodinasciousstate.
Butthisisaverybigdifference.
YoumayenterGhsleepforthousandsoflives,yetyouwillneveretoknowGod.
Butif,evenforamoment,youentermeditationyouwillhavereachedthesameplaceyouhavereachedindeepsleepforthousandsandmillionsoflives--althoughalwaysinanunsciousstate--anditwilltransformyourlifetotally.
Theiingthingisthatonceapersoersmeditatioersthatemptinesswheredeepsleeptakeshim,heneverremainsunscious--evenwhenheisasleep.
WhenKrishnasaysiathattheyogistaysawakewheneveryoneelseisasleep,hedoesheyogineversleepsatall.
Infaoonesleepsasbeautifullyasayogidoes.
Buteveninhisdeepestsleep,thatelementinhimwhichhaseomeditationremainsawake.
Andeverynighttheyogienterssleepinthisawakeate.
Thenforhimmeditationandsleepbeeohesamething--nodiffereweeworemains.
Thenhealwaysenterssleepinfullsciousness.
Onceapersohinhimselfthroughmeditation,heeverbeinanunsciousstateinhissleep.
AnandalivedwithBuddhaformanyyears.
ForyearshesleptnearBuddha.
OnemheaskedBuddha,"ForyearsIhavebeenwatgyousleep.
Notoncedoyouevergesides;yousleepthewholenightinthesameposition.
Yourlimbsstaywheretheywerewhenyoulaydownatnight;thereisnottheslightestmovement.
ManytimesIhavegotupatnighttocheckwhetheryouhavemoved.
Ihavestayedupnightswatgyou--yourhands,yourfeet,restinthesameposition;youneverevergesides.
Doyoukeepsomekindofarecordofyoursleepthewholenight?"
"Idookeepanyrecord,"Buddhareplied.
"Isleepinasciousstate,soIfindogesides.
IifIwantto.
Turningfromonesidetoanotherisnotarequirementofsleep,itsarequirementofyourrestlessmind.
"Arestlessmindoteveinoneplaceforasinglenight,letaloneduringtheday.
Evensleepingatnight,thewholetimethebodyshowsitsrestlessness.
Ifyouwatchapersonight,youwillseeheistinuouslyrestlessthewholetime.
Youwillfindhimmovinghishandsinmuchthesamewayhedoeswhenheisawakeduringtheday.
Inhisdreamatnight,youwillfindhimrunningandpantinginmuchthesamewayithappenswithsomeoneduringtheday--hefeelsoutofbreath,tired.
Atnight,indreams,hefightsinmuchthesamewayhefightsduringtheday.
Heisasangryatnightasheisduringtheday.
Heisfilledwithpassitheday;atnightaswell.
Thereisnofualdiffereweenthedayandthenightofsuchaperson,exceptthatatnightheliesdownexhausted,unscious;everythingelsetiofunasusual.
SoBuddhasaid,"IgesidesifIwantto,butthereisnoneed.
"
Butwedontrealize
Amansittinginachairkeepsjigglinghislegs.
Askhim:"Whyareysjigglinglikethat?Itsuandableiftheymovewhenyouwalk,butwhyaretheymovingwhenyouaresittinginachair?"Nosoonerdoyousaythisthanthemanwillstopimmediately.
Theevenmoveforased,buthewillhavenoexplanationastowhyhewasdoingit.
Itshowshowtherestlessnesswithincausesagitationiirebody.
Iherestlessmind;itotbestill,inoneposition,evenforamoment.
Itwillkeepthewholebodyfidgeting--thelegswillmove,theheadwillshake;evensitting,thebodywillgesides.
Thatswhy,evenfortenminutes,youfinditsodifficulttositstilliation.
Andfromathousanddifferentspotsthebesyoutotwitdturn.
Wedonotnoticethisuntilwesitwithawarenessiation.
Werealizethenwhatsortofabodythisis;itdoesntwanttoremainstillinonepositionevenforased.
Thefusioension,andtheexcitementofthemindstiruptheentirebody.
Forabouttenminuteseverythingdisappearsinwakelesssleep--althoughthesetenminutesareavailableonlytoonewhoispletelyhealthyandpeaceful,nottoeveryone.
etthiskindofsleepanywherefromoofiveminutes;mostpeoplegetonlytwo,oroneminuteofdeepsleep.
Thelittlejuicewereceiveinthatoneminuteofreagtothesourceoflife,lytomakingourwenty-fourhourswork.
Whateverlittleamountofoilthelampreceivesinthatshortperiod,weutilizeittocarryonourlivesforafulltwenty-fourhours.
Thelampofoneslifeburnsonwhatsoeveramountofoilitreceivesthen.
Thisisthereasonthelampburnssoslow:notenoughoiliscollectedtomakethelampoflifeburnbrightlysoitbeeaflamingtorch.
Meditatisyouslowlytothesourceoflife.
Thenitisnotthatyoukeeptakingahandfulofnourishmentoutofit,youaresimplyinthesourceitself.
Thenitisnotthatyourefillyourlampwithmoreoil--theireoofoilbeesavailabletoyou.
Thenyoubegintoliveinthatveryo.
Withthatkindofliving,sleepdisappears--notintheseosleepanymore,butintheseevenwhenoneisasleep,someohinremainswideawake.
Thendreamsexistnomore.
Ayogistaysawake;hesleeps,butheneverdreams--hisdreamsdisappeartotally.
Andwhendreamsdisappear,thoughtsdisappear.
Whatweknowasthoughtsinthewakefulstatearecalleddreamsinthesleepingstate.
Thereisonlyaslightdiffereweenthoughtsanddreams:thoughtsareslightlymorecivilizeddreams,whiledreamsarealittleprimitiveinnature.
Ofthetwo,oheinalthought.
Infact,children,ortheabinaltribes,thinkonlyinpictures,notinwords.
Mansfirstthoughtsarealwaysinpictures.
Forexample,whenachildishungryhedoesnotthinkinwords,"Iamhungry.
"Achildvisualizethemothersbreast;heimaginehimselfsugthebreast.
Hebefilledwiththedesiretogotothebreast,butheotformthewords.
Thewordformationstartsmuchlater;picturesappearfirst.
Wheknoarticularlanguage,weusepicturestoexpressourselvesaswell.
Ifyouhappentogotntryandyoudontknowthelanguage,andyouwanttodrinkwater,youcupyourpalmstoyourmoutharangerwilluandthatyouarethirsty--becausewhenwordsarenotathand,theneedforpicturesarises.
Aerestingthingisthatlanguagesofwordsaredifferentindifferentplaces,butthelanguageofpicturesisuniversal--becauseeverymanspicturelanguageisthesame.
Wehaveieddifferentwords,butpicturesarenotouriion.
Picturesaretheuniversallanguageofthehumanmind.
Apainting,therefore,isuoodanywhereintheworld.
ThereisogeyuagetouandasculptureatKhajurahoorapaintingbyLeonardo.
AsculptureatKhajurahowillbeasuoodbyaese,aFrenandaGerman,asitisbyyou.
AndifyouvisitthemuseumoftheLouvreinFrance,youwillhavenodifficultyinfollowingthepaintiher.

Ifwewanttomakeloveduringtheday,wethinkintermsofwords,butatnightthereisnowaytoexpressloveexceptthroughimages.
Thoughtsdonotseemasaliveasdreams.
Ihewholeimageappearsbeforeyou.
Thatswhyweenjoywatgamoviebasedonanovelmorethanreadingtheself.
Theonlyreasonforthisisthatthenovelisinthelanguageofwordswhilethemovieisinthelanguageofimages.
Inthesamemanner,youfeelgreaterjoybeinghereandlisteningtomelive.
Youwouldhesamejoylisteningtothistalkonatape,becauseheretheimageispresent,ohereareonlywords.
Thelanguageofimagesisous,morenatural.
Atnightwordsturnintopictures;thatsallthedifferehereis.
Thedaydreamsdisappear,thoughtsdisappeartoo;thedaythoughtsdisappear,dreamsdisappearaswell.
Ifthedayisemptyofthoughts,thenightwillbeemptyofdreams.
Andremember,dreamsdontallowyoutosleep,andthoughtsdontallowyoutoawaken.
Makesureyouuandboththings:dreamsdoyousleep,andthoughtsdoyouawaken.
Ifdreamsdisappear,sleepwillbetotal;ifthoughtsdisappear,awakeningwillbetotal.
Iftheawakeningistotalandthesleepistotal,thennotmuchdifferesbetweewo.
Theonlydifferenceisinkeepingtheeyesopenorclosed,andinthebodybeingatworkoratrest.
Onewhoistotallyawakenedsleepstotally,butinbothstateshissciousnessremailythesame.
sciousnessisone,ungeable;onlythebodyges.
Awake,thebodyisatwork;asleep,thebodyisatrest.
TothefriendwhohasaskedwhyGodisnotattainedinsleep,myansweris:hebeattainedifyouremainawakeeveninyoursleep.
Somymethodofmeditationisasleepihod--sleepinginawareness,enteringintosleepwithawareness.
ThatswhyIaskyoutorelaxyourbody,torelaxyourbreathing,tocalmdownyourthoughts.
Allthisisapreparationforsleep.
Therefore,itoftenhappensthatsomefriendsgotosleepduriation--obviously;thisisapreparationforsleep.
And,whilepreparingforit,theydontknowwheosleep.
ThatswhyIrepeatthethirdsuggestion:stayawakeinside,remainsciouswithihebodybetotallyrelaxed,letthebreathiallyrelaxed,morerelaxedthanitnormallyiswhilesleeping.
Butstayawakewithin.
Withiyourawarenessburnlikealampsoyoudontfallasleep.

Withthedisappearaneditationtheworldhasalmostbeeirreligious,andwhensleepdisappearstheworldwillbeetotallyirreligious.
Thereisnohopefioninasleeplessworld.
Youwillnotbelievehowclosely,howdeeply,weareectedtosleep.
Hoersonwilllivehislifedependstotallyonhowhesleeps.
Ifhedoesnotsleepwell,hisentirelifewillbeachaos:allhisrelationshipswillbeeentangled,everythingwillbeepoisonous,filledwithrage.
If,orary,apersonsleepsdeeply,therewillbefreshnessinhislife--peadjoywilltinuouslyflowinhislife.
Underlyinghisrelationships,hislove,everythingelse,therewillbeserenity.
Butifhelosessleep,allhisrelationshipswillgohaywire.
Hewillhaveamessed-uplifewithhisfamily,hiswife,hisson,hismother,hisfather,histeacher,hisstudents--allofthem.
SleepbringsustoapointinourunsciouswhereweareimmersedinGod--althoughnotfortoolong.
Eventhehealthiestpersononlyreachestohisdeeperlevelfortenminutesofhisnightlyeighthourssleep.
Forthesetenminutesheissopletelylost,drownedihatnotevenadreamexists.
Sleepisnottotalaslongasoneisdreaming--onekeepsmoviweeesofsleepandwakefulness.
Dreamingisastateinwhieishalf-asleepandhalf-awake.
Tobeinadreammeansthateventhoughyoureyesareclosed,youarenotasleep;externalinfluencesarestillaffegyou.
Thepeopleyoumetduringtheday,youarestillwiththematnightinyourdreams.
Dreamsoccupythemiddlestatebetweensleepandwakefulness.
Andtherearemanypeoplewhohavelostsleep--theymerelyremaininthedreamingstate,withouteverreagthestateofsleep.
Andthatyoudontrememberinthemthatyoudreamtallnightisbesidethepoint.

Itisinthisgapthatmahedivine.
Themaeisuodetectthisspabetween,thisgap.
Themaerecordstheinternalactivityaslongasthemanisdreaming--thehegapandthemandisappearssomewhere.
Andthen,aftertenmihemaestartsrecagain.
Itisdifficulttosaywherethemanwasduringthatten-mierval.
Ameripsychologistsareveryintriguedbythisgap;heheysidersleepthebiggestmystery.
ThefactisthatoGod,sleepistheonlymystery.
Thereisnoothermystery.
Yousleepeveryday,yetyouhavenoideawhatsleepis.
Amansleepsallthroughhislife,ahingges--heknowsnothingaboutsleep.
Thereasonyoudontknowanythingaboutsleepisthatwhehere,youarenot.
Remember,youareonlyaslongassleepisnot.
Andso,youetoknowonlyasmuchasthemaeknows.
Justasinthefaceofthegapthemaestopsandisuoreachwherethemanhasbeentransported,youotreachthereeither--becauseyouarenomorethanamaeaswell.
Sinceyoudonoteacrossthatgapeither,sleepremainsamystery;itremainsbeyondyourreach.
Thisissobecauseamanfallsintowakelesssleeponlywhenheceasestoexistinhis"I-am-ness.
"Andtherefore,astheegokeepsgrowing,sleepbeeslessandless.
Anegoisticpersonloseshiscapacitytosleepbecausehisego,theI,keepsassertingitselftwenty-fourhoursaday.
ItistheIthatwakesup,thesameIthatwalksoreet.
TheIremainssopreseiretwenty-fourhoursthatatthemomentoffallingasleep,wheimeapproachestodroptheI,oneisuogetridofit.
Obviously,itbeesdifficulttofallasleep.
AslongastheIexists,sleepisimpossible.
And,asItoldyouyesterday,aslongastheIexists,enteringintoGodisimpossible.
EnteringintosleepaeringintoGodareexactlyohesamething;theonlydifferehatthroughsleepoersintoGodinanunsciousstate,whilethroughmeditatioersintoGodinasciousstate.
Butthisisaverybigdifference.
YoumayenterGhsleepforthousandsoflives,yetyouwillneveretoknowGod.
Butif,evenforamoment,youentermeditationyouwillhavereachedthesameplaceyouhavereachedindeepsleepforthousandsandmillionsoflives--althoughalwaysinanunsciousstate--anditwilltransformyourlifetotally.
Theiingthingisthatonceapersoersmeditatioersthatemptinesswheredeepsleeptakeshim,heneverremainsunscious--evenwhenheisasleep.
WhenKrishnasaysiathattheyogistaysawakewheneveryoneelseisasleep,hedoesheyogineversleepsatall.
Infaoonesleepsasbeautifullyasayogidoes.
Buteveninhisdeepestsleep,thatelementinhimwhichhaseomeditationremainsawake.
Andeverynighttheyogienterssleepinthisawakeate.
Thenforhimmeditationandsleepbeeohesamething--nodiffereweeworemains.
Thenhealwaysenterssleepinfullsciousness.
Onceapersohinhimselfthroughmeditation,heeverbeinanunsciousstateinhissleep.
AnandalivedwithBuddhaformanyyears.
ForyearshesleptnearBuddha.
OnemheaskedBuddha,"ForyearsIhavebeenwatgyousleep.
Notoncedoyouevergesides;yousleepthewholenightinthesameposition.
Yourlimbsstaywheretheywerewhenyoulaydownatnight;thereisnottheslightestmovement.
ManytimesIhavegotupatnighttocheckwhetheryouhavemoved.
Ihavestayedupnightswatgyou--yourhands,yourfeet,restinthesameposition;youneverevergesides.
Doyoukeepsomekindofarecordofyoursleepthewholenight?"
"Idookeepanyrecord,"Buddhareplied.
"Isleepinasciousstate,soIfindogesides.
IifIwantto.
Turningfromonesidetoanotherisnotarequirementofsleep,itsarequirementofyourrestlessmind.
"Arestlessmindoteveinoneplaceforasinglenight,letaloneduringtheday.
Evensleepingatnight,thewholetimethebodyshowsitsrestlessness.
Ifyouwatchapersonight,youwillseeheistinuouslyrestlessthewholetime.
Youwillfindhimmovinghishandsinmuchthesamewayhedoeswhenheisawakeduringtheday.
Inhisdreamatnight,youwillfindhimrunningandpantinginmuchthesamewayithappenswithsomeoneduringtheday--hefeelsoutofbreath,tired.
Atnight,indreams,hefightsinmuchthesamewayhefightsduringtheday.
Heisasangryatnightasheisduringtheday.
Heisfilledwithpassitheday;atnightaswell.
Thereisnofualdiffereweenthedayandthenightofsuchaperson,exceptthatatnightheliesdownexhausted,unscious;everythingelsetiofunasusual.
SoBuddhasaid,"IgesidesifIwantto,butthereisnoneed.

Butwedontrealize
Amansittinginachairkeepsjigglinghislegs.
Askhim:"Whyareysjigglinglikethat?Itsuandableiftheymovewhenyouwalk,butwhyaretheymovingwhenyouaresittinginachair?"Nosoonerdoyousaythisthanthemanwillstopimmediately.
Theevenmoveforased,buthewillhavenoexplanationastowhyhewasdoingit.
Itshowshowtherestlessnesswithincausesagitationiirebody.
Iherestlessmind;itotbestill,inoneposition,evenforamoment.
Itwillkeepthewholebodyfidgeting--thelegswillmove,theheadwillshake;evensitting,thebodywillgesides.
Thatswhy,evenfortenminutes,youfinditsodifficulttositstilliation.
Andfromathousanddifferentspotsthebesyoutotwitdturn.
Wedonotnoticethisuntilwesitwithawarenessiation.
Werealizethenwhatsortofabodythisis;itdoesntwanttoremainstillinonepositionevenforased.
Thefusioension,andtheexcitementofthemindstiruptheentirebody.
Forabouttenminuteseverythingdisappearsinwakelesssleep--althoughthesetenminutesareavailableonlytoonewhoispletelyhealthyandpeaceful,nottoeveryone.
etthiskindofsleepanywherefromoofiveminutes;mostpeoplegetonlytwo,oroneminuteofdeepsleep.
Thelittlejuicewereceiveinthatoneminuteofreagtothesourceoflife,lytomakingourwenty-fourhourswork.
Whateverlittleamountofoilthelampreceivesinthatshortperiod,weutilizeittocarryonourlivesforafulltwenty-fourhours.
Thelampofoneslifeburnsonwhatsoeveramountofoilitreceivesthen.
Thisisthereasonthelampburnssoslow:notenoughoiliscollectedtomakethelampoflifeburnbrightlysoitbeeaflamingtorch.
Meditatisyouslowlytothesourceoflife.
Thenitisnotthatyoukeeptakingahandfulofnourishmentoutofit,youaresimplyinthesourceitself.
Thenitisnotthatyourefillyourlampwithmoreoil--theireoofoilbeesavailabletoyou.
Thenyoubegintoliveinthatveryo.
Withthatkindofliving,sleepdisappears--notintheseosleepanymore,butintheseevenwhenoneisasleep,someohinremainswideawake.
Thendreamsexistnomore.
Ayogistaysawake;hesleeps,butheneverdreams--hisdreamsdisappeartotally.
Andwhendreamsdisappear,thoughtsdisappear.
Whatweknowasthoughtsinthewakefulstatearecalleddreamsinthesleepingstate.
Thereisonlyaslightdiffereweenthoughtsanddreams:thoughtsareslightlymorecivilizeddreams,whiledreamsarealittleprimitiveinnature.
Ofthetwo,oheinalthought.
Infact,children,ortheabinaltribes,thinkonlyinpictures,notinwords.
Mansfirstthoughtsarealwaysinpictures.
Forexample,whenachildishungryhedoesnotthinkinwords,"Iamhungry.
"Achildvisualizethemothersbreast;heimaginehimselfsugthebreast.
Hebefilledwiththedesiretogotothebreast,butheotformthewords.
Thewordformationstartsmuchlater;picturesappearfirst.
Wheknoarticularlanguage,weusepicturestoexpressourselvesaswell.
Ifyouhappentogotntryandyoudontknowthelanguage,andyouwanttodrinkwater,youcupyourpalmstoyourmoutharangerwilluandthatyouarethirsty--becausewhenwordsarenotathand,theneedforpicturesarises.
Aerestingthingisthatlanguagesofwordsaredifferentindifferentplaces,butthelanguageofpicturesisuniversal--becauseeverymanspicturelanguageisthesame.
Wehaveieddifferentwords,butpicturesarenotouriion.

Andremember,dreamsdontallowyoutosleep,andthoughtsdontallowyoutoawaken.
Makesureyouuandboththings:dreamsdoyousleep,andthoughtsdoyouawaken.
Ifdreamsdisappear,sleepwillbetotal;ifthoughtsdisappear,awakeningwillbetotal.
Iftheawakeningistotalandthesleepistotal,thennotmuchdifferesbetweewo.
Theonlydifferenceisinkeepingtheeyesopenorclosed,andinthebodybeingatworkoratrest.
Onewhoistotallyawakenedsleepstotally,butinbothstateshissciousnessremailythesame.

ThatswhyIaskyoutorelaxyourbody,torelaxyourbreathing,tocalmdownyourthoughts.
