Themanor-houseofFerndeanwasabuildingofsiderableantiquity,moderatesize,andnoarchitecturalpretensions,deepburiedinawood.Ihadheardofitbefore.Mr.Rochesteroftenspokeofit,andsometimeswentthere.Hisfatherhadpurchasedtheestateforthesakeofthegamecovers.Hewouldhaveletthehouse,butcouldfind,insequesineligibleandinsalubrioussite.Ferhenremaineduninhabitedandunfurnished,withtheexceptionofsometwoorthreeroomsfittedupfortheaodationofthesquirewhehereintheseasontoshoot.

Hisformwasofthesamestrongandstalwarttourasever:hisportwasstillerect,hisheirwasstillravenblaorwerehisfeaturesalteredorsunk:notinoneyear’sspace,byanysorrow,couldhisathleticstrengthbequelledorhisvigorousprimeblighted.ButinhistenanceIsawage:thatlookeddesperateandbrooding—thatremindedmeofsedaeredwildbeastorbird,dangeroustoapproahissullehecagedeagle,whosegedeyescrueltyhasextinguished,mightlookaslookedthatsightlessSamson.
