  Ceremony,andeven,silence,fromwhatevermotivetheymayarise,haveahurtfultendency,whentheygivetheleastdegreeofteobaseandwickedperformances;wherefore,ifthismaximbeadmitted,itnaturallyfollows,thattheKingsSpeech,asbeingapieceoffinishedvillany,deserved,andstilldeserves,ageneralexecrationbothbythegressandthepeople.Yet,asthedomestiquillityofanation,dependsgreatly,ontheCHASTITYofwhatmayproperlybecalledNATIONALMANNERS,itisofteer,topasssomethingsoveridisdain,thantomakeuseofsuewmethodsofdislike,asmightintroducetheleastinnovation,onthatguardianofourpeadsafety.And,perhaps,itischieflyowingtothisprudentdelicacy,thattheKingsSpeech,hathnot,beforenow,sufferedapublicexecution.

  TheSpeechifitmaybecalledone,isnothierthanawilfulaudaciouslibelagainstthetruth,theongood,andtheexistenankind;andisaformalandpompousmethodofuphumansacrificestotheprideoftyrants.

  Butthisgeneralmassaankind.isoheprivileges,aainsequenceofKings;forasnatureknowsthemNOT,theyknowNOTHER,andalthoughtheyarebeingsofourOWing,theyknownotUS,andarebeethegodsoftheircreators.

  TheSpeechhathonegoodquality,whichis,thatitisnotcalculatedtodeceive,herwe,evenifwewould,bedeceivedbyit.

  Brutalityandtyrannyappearonthefaceofit.Itleavesusatnoloss:Andeverylinevinces,eveninthemomentofreading,thatHe,whohuntsthewoodsforprey,thenakedanduntutoredIndian,islessaSavagethantheKingofBritain.

  SirJohnDalrymple,theputativefatherofawhiniicalpiece,fallaciouslycalled,"THEADDRESSOFTHEPEOPLEOF_ENGLAND_TOTHEINHABITANTSOF_AMERICA_,"hath,perhaps,fromavainsupposition,thatthepeopleherewerethtehepompanddescriptionofaking,given,(thoughveryunwiselyonhispart)therealcharacterofthepresentone:"But"saysthiswriter,"ifyouareinedtopayplimentstoanadministration,whichwedonotplainof,"(meaningtheMarquisofRoghamsattherepealoftheStampAct)"itisveryunfairinyoutowithholdthemfromthatprincebyWHOSE_NODALOHEYWEREPERMITTEDTODOANYTHING."Thisistoryismwithawitness!Hereisidolatryevenwithoutamask:Andhewhocalmlyhear,anddigestsuchdoe,hathforfeitedhisclaimtorationalityanapostatefromtheorderofmanhood;andoughttobesideredasone,whohathnotonlygivenuptheprnityofman,butsunkhimselfbeherankofanimals,andptiblycrawlthroughtheworldlikeaworm.

  However,itmattersverylittlenow,whatthekingofEnglahersaysordoes;hehathwickedlybrokenthrougheverymoralandhumanobligation,tramplednatureandseathhisfeet;andbyasteadyandstitutionalspiritofinsolendcruelty,procuredforhimselfanuniversalhatred.ItisNOWtheiofAmericatoprovideforherself.

  Shehathalreadyalargeandyoungfamily,whomitismoreherdutytotakecareof,thantobegrantingawayherproperty,tosupportapowerwhoisbeeareproachtothenamesofmenandchristians--YE,whoseofficeitistowatchoverthemoralsofanation,ofwhatsoeversectordenominationyeareof,aswellasye,who,aremoreimmediatelytheguardiansofthepublicliberty,ifyewishtopreserveyournativetryuninatedbyEuropeancorruptioiaration--Butleavingthemoralparttoprivaterefle,Ishallchieflyfinemyfartherremarkstothefollowingheads.

  First.ThatitistheiofAmericatobeseparatedfromBritain.

  Sedly.Whichistheeasiestandmostpracticableplan,RECILIATIONORINDEPENDAhsomeoccasionalremarks.

  Insupportofthefirst,Icould,ifIjudgeditproper,producetheopinionofsomeoftheablestandmostexperiencedmenonthisti;andwhoseses,onthathead,arepubliown.Itisiyaself-evidentposition:Fornonationinastatendependance,limitedinitserdcrampedaeredinitslegislativepowers,everarriveatanymaterialeminence.Americadothknoulenceis;andalthoughtheprogresswhichshehathmadestandsunparalleledioryofothernations,itisbutchildhood,paredwithwhatshewouldbecapableofarrivingat,hadshe,assheoughttohave,thelegislativepowersinherownhands.

  Englandis,atthistime,proudlycovetingwhatwoulddood,wereshetoaplishit;aihesitatingonamatter,whichwillbeherfinalruinifed.ItistheerdnotthequestofAmerica,bywhiglandistohebeed,andthatwouldimeasuretinue,werethetriesasindependantofeachotherasFrandSpain;becauseinmanyarticles,hergotoabettermarket.ButitistheindependahistryonBritainoranyother,whiowthemainandonlyobjectworthyoftention,andwhich,likeallothertruthsdiscoveredbyy,earclearerandstrongereveryday.

  First.Becauseitwilletothatoimeorother.

  Sedly.Because,theloisdelayedtheharderitwillbetoaplish.

  Ihavefrequentlyamusedmyselfbothinpublidprivatepanies,withsilentlyremarking,thespeciouserrorsofthosewhospeakwithoutrefleg.AndamongthemanywhichIhaveheard,thefollowihemostgeneral,viz.

  thathadthisrupturehappenedfortyorfiftyyearshensteadofNOW,thetiwouldhavebeenmoreabletohaveshakenoffthedependaowhichIreply,thatourmilitaryability,ATTHISTIME,arisesfromtheexperiencegaihelastwar,andwhifortyorfiftyyearstime,wouldhavebeentotallyextinct.Theti,wouldnot,bythattime,havehadaGeneral,orevenamilitaryofficerleft;ahosewhomaysucceedus,wouldhavebeenasignorantofmartialmattersastheaIndians:Andthissingleposition,closelyatteo,willunansrove,thatthepresenttimeispreferabletoallothers.Theargumentturnsthus--attheclusionofthelastwar,eriewantednumbers;andfortyorfiftyyearshence,weshouldhavenumbers,withoutexperience;wherefore,theproperpointoftime,mustbesomeparticularpoiweewoextremes,inwhichasufficyoftheformerremains,andaproperincreaseofthelatterisobtained:Andthatpointoftimeisthepresenttime.

  Thereaderwillpardonthisdigression,asitdoesnotproperlyeuheheadIfirstsetoutwith,andtowhichIagaiurnbythefollowingposition,viz.

  ShouldaffairshepatchedupwithBritain,aoremainthegandsnpowerofAmerica,(which,asmattersarenowcircumstanced,isgivingupthepoiirely)weshalldepriveourselvesoftheverymeansofsinkiwehave,ormaytract.Thevalueofthebadswhieoftheprovincesaredestinelydeprivedof,bytheunjustextensionofthelimitsofada,valuedonlyatfivepoundssterlingperhundredacres,amounttoupwardsoftwenty-fivemillions,Pennsylvaniacurrendthequit-rentsatonepennysterlingperacre,totwomillionsyearly.

  Itisbythesaleofthoselandsthatthedebtmaybesunk,withoutburthentoany,a-rentreservedthereon,willalwayslessen,andintime,willwhollysupporttheyearlyexpenceofgover.Itmattersnothowloisinpaying,sothatthelandswhensoldbeappliedtothedischargeofit,andfortheexecutionofwhich,thegressforthetimebeing,willbethetialtrustees..

  Iproowtothesedhead,viz.Whichistheeasiestandmostpracticableplan,RECILIATIONorlNDEPENDAhsomeoccasionalremarks.

  Hewhotakesnaturefuideisnoteasilybeatenoutofhisargument,andonthatground,IanswerGENERALLY--THAT_INDEPENDANCE_BEINGA_SINGLESIMPLELINE,_TAIHINOURSELVES;ANDRECILIATION,AMATTEREXCEEDINGLYPERPLEXEDANDPLICATED,ANDINWHICH,ATREACHEROUSCAPRICIOUSCOURTISTOINTERFERE,GIVESTHEAHOUTADOUBT.

  ThepresentstateofAmericaistrulyalarmingtoeverymanwhoiscapableofreflexion.Withoutlaw,withoutgover,withoutanyothermodeofpowerthanwhatisfoundedon,andgrantedbycourtesy.

  Heldtogetherbyanunexampledcurrenceofse,which,ishelesssubjecttoge,andwhich,everysecretenemyisendeavtodissolve.Ourpresentdition,is,Legislationwithoutlaw;wisdomwithoutaplan;astitutionwithoutaname;and,whatisstrangelyastonishing,perfedependaendingfordependaheinstanceiswithoutapret;theeverexistedbefore;andwhotellwhatmaybetheevent?Thepropertyofnomanissecureinthepresentunbracedsystemofthings.Themindofthemultitudeisleftatrandom,andseeingnofixedobjectbeforethem,theypursuesuchasfancyoropinionstarts.Nothingiscriminal;thereisnosuchthingastreason;wherefore,everyohinkshimselfatlibertytoactashepleases.TheToriesdarednothaveassembledoffensively,hadtheyknownthattheirlives,bythatact,wereforfeitedtothelawsofthestate.Alineofdistinshouldbedrawween,Englishsoldierstakeninbattle,andinhabitantsofAmericatakeninarms.

  Thefirstareprisoners,butthelattertraitors.

  Theoneforfeitshisliberty,theotherhishead.

  Notwithstandingourwisdom,thereisavisiblefeeblenessinsomeofourproceedingswhichgivesencementtodissensions.

  ThetialBeltistoolooselybuckled.Andifsomethingisnotdoime,itwillbetoolatetodoanything,andweshallfallintoastate,inwhieitherRECILIATIONnorINDEPENDANCEwillbepracticable.Thekingandhisworthlessadherentsaregotattheiroldgameofdividii,andtherearenotwantingamongus,Printers,whowillbebusyinspreadingspeciousfalsehoods.TheartfulandhypocriticalletterwhichappearedafewmonthsagointwooftheNewYorkpapers,andlikewiseintwoothers,isanevidetherearemenwhowaherjudgmentorhoy.

  Itiseasygettingintoholesandersandtalkingofreciliation:Butdosuseriouslysider,howdifficultthetaskis,andhowdangerousitmayprove,shouldthetidividethereon.Dotheytakewithintheirview,allthevariousordersofmenwhosesituationandcircumstances,aswellastheirowobesideredtherein.

  DotheyputthemselvesintheplaceofthesuffererwhoseALLisALREADYgone,andofthesoldier,whohathquittedALLforthedefenceofhistry.Iftheirilljudgedmoderatioedtotheirownprivatesituationsonly,regardlessofothers,theeventwillvihem,that"theyarereingwithouttheirHost."Putus,sayssome,oingwewereoninsixty-three:Towhiswer,therequestisnotnowinthepowerofBritaintoplywith,herwillsheproposeit;butifitwere,andevenshouldbegranted,Iask,asareasonablequestion,Bywhatmeansissuchacorruptandfaithlesscourttobekepttoitses?Anotherparliament,hepresent,mayhereafterrepealtheobligation,oense,ofitsbeingviolentlyobtained,orunwiselygranted;andinthatcase,Whereisourredress?--Nogoingtolawwithnations;ohebarristersofs;andthesword,notofjustice,butofwar,decidesthesuit.

  Tobeoingofsixty-three,itisnotsuffit,thatthelawsoonthesamestate,but,thatourcircumstances,likewise,beputonthesamestate;Ourburntaroyedtownsrepairedorbuiltup,ourprivatelossesmadegood,ourpublicdebts(tractedfordefence)discharged;otherwise,weshallbemillionsworsethathatenviableperiod.Sucharequest,haditbeenpliedwithayearago,wouldhavewontheheartandsouloftheti-butnowitistoolate,"TheRubiispassed."Besides,thetakinguparms,merelytoenforcetherepealofapeiarylaw,seemsasunwarrantablebythedivinelaw,andasrepugnanttohumanfeelings,asthetakinguparmstoenforceobediehereto.Theobjeeitherside,dothnotjustifythemeans;forthelivesofmeoovaluabletobecastawayonsuchtrifles.Itistheviolencewhichisdohreateoourpersons;thedestruofourpropertybyanarmedforce;theinvasionofourtrybyfireandsword,whistiouslyqualifiestheuseofarms:Aant,inwhichsuchamodeofdefencebeecessary,allsubjetoBritainoughttohaveceased;andtheindependanerica,shouldhavebeensidered,asdatingitsaerafrom,andpublishedby,THEFIRSTMUSKETTHATWASFIREDAGAIhislineisalineofsisteneitherdrawnbycapriorextendedbyambition;butproducedbyaofevents,ofwhichtheieswerenottheauthors.

  Ishallcludetheseremarkswiththefollowingtimelyandwellintendedhints.Weoughttoreflect,thattherearethreedifferentwaysbywhiindependancymayhereafterbeeffected;andthatOhoseTHREE,willonedayorother,bethefateofAmerica,viz.Bythelegalvoiceofthepeopleingress;byamilitarypower;orbyamob--ItmaynotalwayshappenthatOURsoldiersarecitizens,aitudeabodyofreasonablemen;virtue,asIhavealreadyremarked,isnothereditary,herisitperpetual.Shouldanindependancybebroughtaboutbythefirstofthosemeans,wehaveeveryopportunityandeveryencementbeforeus,toformthepureststitutiononthefaceoftheearth.Wehaveitinourpowertobegintheworldain.Asituation,similartothepresent,hathnothappenedsihedaysofNoahuntilnow.Thebirthdayofanewworldisathand,andaraen,perhapsasnumerousasallEuropetains,aretoreceivetheirportionoffreedomfromtheeventofafewmonths.

  TheReflexionisawful--andinthispointofview,Howtrifling,howridiculous,dothelittle,paltrycavillings,ofafewweakoriedmenappear,whenweighedagainstthebusinessofaworld.

  Shouldwehepresentfavourableandinvitingperiod,andanIndependancebehereaftereffectedbyanyothermeachargethesequeoourselves,ortothoserather,whosenarrorejudicedsouls,arehabituallyopposingthemeasure,withouteitherinquiringorrefleg.TherearereasonstobegiveninsupportofIndependance,whishouldratherprivatelythinkof,thanbepubliclytoldof.Weoughtnotnowtobedebatiherweshallbeindependantornot,but,anxioustoaplishitonafirm,secure,andhonorablebasis,anduneasyratherthatitisbeganupon.

  Everydayvincesusofitsy.Eveories(ifsuchbeiremainamongus)should,ofallmehemostsolicitoustopromoteit;for,astheappoiofitteesatfirst,protectedthemfrompopularrage,so,awiseandwellestablishedfover,willbetheoainmeansoftinuingitsecurelytothem.

  WHEREFORE,iftheyhavenotvirtueenoughtobeWHIGS,theyoughttohaveprudenoughtowishforIndependance.

  Inshort,IndependaheonlyBONDthattyeaogether.Weshallthenseeourobjedourearswillbelegallyshutagainsttheschemesofanintriguing,aswell,asacruelenemy.Weshallthentoo,beonaproperfooting,totreatwithBritain;forthereisreasontoclude,thattheprideofthatcourt,willbelesshurtbytreatingwiththeAmeristatesfortermsofpeace,thanwiththose,whomshedenominates,"rebellioussubjects,"fortermsofaodation.

  Itisourdelayingitthatenceshertohopeforquest,andourbackwardendsonlytoprolongthewar.Aswehave,withoutanygoodeffecttherefrom,withheldourtradetoobtainaredressrievances,letusnowtrythealternative,byindependantlyredressingthemourselves,andthentooperade.ThemertileandreasoinEngland,willbestillwithus;because,peacewithtrade,ispreferabletowarwithoutit.Andifthisofferbenotaccepted,othercourtsmaybeappliedto.

  OnthesegroundsIrestthematter.Andasnoofferhathyetbeeorefutethedoetaiheformereditionsofthispamphlet,itisaiveproof,thateitherthedoeotberefuted,or,thatthepartyinfavourofitaretoonumeroustobeopposed.WHEREFORE,insteadofgazingateachotherwithsuspiciousordoubtfulcuriosity;leteachofus,holdouttohisneighbourtheheartyhandoffriendship,anduniteindrawingaline,which,likeanactofoblivionshallburyinfetfulnesseveryformerdissension.

  Wherefore,thisepistleisnotsoproperlyaddressedtoyouasareligious,butasapoliticalbody,dabblinginmatters,whichtheprofessedQuietudeofyourPrinciplesinstructyounottomeddlewith.Asyouhave,withoutaproperauthorityforsodoing,putyourselvesintheplaceofthewholebodyoftheQuakers,so,thewriterofthis,iobeonanequalrankwithyourselves,isuhey,ofputtinghimselfintheplaceofallthose,rovetheverywritingsandprinciples,againstwhich,yourtestimonyisdirected:Ahchosenthissingularsituation,ihatyoumightdiscoverinhimthatpresumptionofcharacterwhichyouotseeinyourselves.ForherhenoryouhaveanyclaimortitletoPOLITICALREPRESENTATION.

  Whenmenhavedepartedfromtherightway,itisnowohattheystumbleandfall.Anditisevidentfromthemannerinwhichyehavemanagedyourtestimony,thatpolitics,(asareligiousbodyofmen)isnotyourproperWalk;forhoweverteditmightappeartoyou,itis,heless,ajumbleofgoodandbadputuogether,andtheclusiondrawntherefrom,bothunnaturalandunjust.

  Thetwofirstpages,(andthewholedothnotmakefiveyoucreditfor,andexpectthesamecivilityfromyou,becausetheloveanddesireofpeaotfioQuakerism,itisthenatural,aswellthereligiouswishofalldenominationsofmen.Andonthisground,asmenlabtoestablishanIndependantstitutionofourown,doweexceedallothersinourhope,end,andaim.OURPLANISPEACEFOREVER.

  Yeappeartous,tohavemistakenpartyforsce;because,thegeenorofyouraswantsuniformity--Anditisexceedinglydifficulttoustogivecredittomanyofyourpretendedscruples;because,weseethemmadebythesamemen,who,intheveryinstantthattheyareexclaimingagainstthemammonofthisworld,areheless,huntingafteritassteadyasTime,andaeaskeeh.
