Iouaesofsciousnessandunscioushefirstthingthatobeuoodisthattheyarenotoppositestates,althoughnormallytheyareseenasopposites.
Actually,weareusedtoseeinglifeintermsofduality.
Firstwecreateadivisioweendarknessandlightahinktheyaretwoseparatethings.
Assooakedarknessandlighttobetwodifferentthingsweitafualmistake.
Anythoughtthatfollowsthismistakeisboundt;iteverberight.
Darknessandlightarevariationsofthesamething.
Theyaredifferentaspects,differentstagesofthesamething.
Itwouldbeappropriatetocalldarknessadeficyoflight.
Lightwhichoureyesotcatch,lightwhichoureyesotdetect,lookslikedarkness.
Similarly,weshouldcalllightasheofdarkness--darknesswhichoureyescatch.
Sodarknessandlightarenottwoseparatethings,theyarevaryingdegreesofthesamephenomenon.
Whatistrueofdarknessandlightistrueofallotherdualitiesoflife.
Thesamethingistrueregardingtheunsciousandthesciousstates.
Youmaysiderunsciousnessasdarkness,andsciousnessaslight.
Infact,eveunsciousofallobjectsisnotpletelyunscious.
Arootallunscious--itexistsinastateofsciousoo,butthesciousnessissosmallitishardtograsp.
Amanisasleep,amanisawake.
Sleepandwakefulnessarenottwodifferentthings.
Thesamemanisfloatiweensleepandwakefulness.
Whatwecallbeingasleepisalsonotreallybeingasleep.
Forexample,fivehundredpeopleareasleepinaroomandyoucallthename"Rama"aloud.
OnlythepersonnamedRamaopenshiseyestofindoutwhoisdisturbinghissleep,whohascalledhim.
Theremainingfourhundredandy-ninepeoplestayasleep.
Hadthismanbeenreallyasleep,hecouldnothaveheardanyonecallinghim;hecouldnothavereizedthathisnamewasRama.
Hissleepwasactuallyohelesserstatesofwakefulness,orhisstateofwakefulnesshadbeealittlehazy,alittlefuzzy.
Youseeamanrunningoreet.
Hehasheardthathishouseisonfire.
Yougreethim.
Heseesyouahedoesnotseeyou.
Hehearsyouahedoesnothearyou.
Youaskhimthedaywhyhedidurnyreetingandhereplies,"Myhousewasonfire.
AtthattimeIcouldhingexceptmyhouse,Icouldnthearanythingexceptthehesoundaroundthehouse,peopleshoutingThehouseisonfire!Iamsureyoumusthaveseenme,greetedme,butIcouldntseeyou,Icouldnthearyou.

Sowhatisbeingasleepandbeingawake?ThefirstthingIwouldliketosayis:theyarenottwooppositethings.
MatterandGodarenottwooppositethings.
Sleepandwakefulness,lightanddarkness,devilanddivine,goodandbad,arenotoppositethings.
Butthehumanmindimmediatelydividesthingsintotwo.
Infaosoonerdoesthemindraiseaquestionthanitdividesthethingintotwo.
Themomentmindthinks,itdividesintotwo.
Tothinkandtodivideintotwostituteohesamething.
Themomentyouthink,youdivide.
Thinkingisaprocessofdivision--youimmediatelydivideintotwo.
Themoreamanisusedtothinking,themorehewillkeepondividing.
Ultimately,hewillendupwithfragmentsandthewholewillbepletelylost.
Andtheaoeveryquestiohiswholeness,inthistotality.
Themindisuofindtheaoaion.
Infact,itraisesanumberofquestionsfromeasweritfinds.
Nomatterhowsignifittheansweris,themindwillimmediatelyraisedozensofquestions--butiteverfindanaoanything.
Thereisareasonforthis:theanswerliesinthewholeness.
Butthemindishelpless.
Ittfunwithoutmakingdivisions.
Forexample,Iamsittialkingtoyou.
Youarelisteningtomeandyouarealsolookingatme.
Theoneyouarelookingatandtheoneyouarelisteningtoarenottwodifferentindividuals.
However,asfarasyouareed,youarelookingwithyoureyesandhearingwithyourears.
Youhavedividedmeintotwoparts.
Ifyouweretositclosetomeandsmellmybody,youwouldhavedividedmeintothree.
Thenyouwillputthesethreepartstogetheraeanimageofme.
Butthatwontbemyimage,itwillbeyouradditionoftheparts.
Itwillbemisleading.
Youevercreatethewholebyaddinguptheparts,becausethewholeisthatwhichwasbeforethepartsweremade.
Nosoonerdoweaskaboutsciousnessandunscioushanwehavebeguntodivide.
Inmyview,theyareone.
ButwhenIsaytheyareone,Idoheyareohesame.
Iamnotsayingsciousselfisunsciousness.
WhenIsaydarknessandlightareone,Idontmeanyouwalkinthedarkasyoudowhenthereislight.
WhenIsaydarknessandlightareone,Imeaenceismadedegreesofthesamemaiy.
Thedifferensistsinbeingalittlemoreoralittleless,inbeiornotpresent.
Nowitwillbeeasierforyoutofollowme.
Whatisthisthingwhichappearsassciousnesswhenitispresentierdegreeandbeesunsciousnesswhesinalesserdegree?Thehisveryelementisattention.
Thedeeperandsharpertheattention,thesameisthestateofsciousness.
Unsciousnessandsciousnessarebutdiffereiesofattention.
Themoreprofoueofattention,thesamewillbethesciousness.
Themoretenuoustheattention,thesamewillbethestateofunsciousness.
Infact,thediffereweenarodahumanisthattherockdoesnothavedensityofattentionatanylevelofsciousness.
Atwhateverleveltheattentionbeesdensed,sciousakespladatwhateverlevelthedensityofattentiondecreases,unsciousnessoccurs.
Ifyouletthesunsrayspassthroughalens,fireisimmediatelyproduced.
Adensedlightcreatesfire.
Whenitlosesitsdensity,whenitbeestenuous,lightremains.
Thereisfireinanemberbecauseittainshighlydensedlight.
Wheneverlightisdensed,fireisproduced.
Whenthelightbeestenuous--thatis,whenitsdensityisreduced--thenevenfireremainsjustlight.
Asdensitydecreasesdarknessincreases.
Withanincreaseiy,lightincreases.
Ifwetraveltowardsthesun,thelightwillkeeponincreasing,becausetheraysareverydehesun.
Aswemovefartherandfartherawayfromthesun,thelightwillgoondecreasing.
Atthefarthestdistanthesuntherewillbenothingbutdarkness,becauseofthereduceddensityoflight.
Iapplythesameprincipletothestatesofunsciousnessandsciousness.
Thebasicipleisattention.
Itsfluidity,density,tenuity,solidity,determihertocalloneawakeorasleep,whethertocalloneunsciousorscious.
Wemustremember,however,thatallthesewordsareusediivesense.
Forexample,whehereislightinthisroom,itohereismhtiheroomthanthereisoutside.
Thereislightinthisroombecauseitisdarkoutside.
Weretherebrightsunshiside,thisroomwouldlookdarker.
Sowhenwesaysomebodyisawakeorasleep,wesimplymean,inparisontosomeoneelse.
Languagehasitsowndifficulty;itwouldbeaproblemtotinuallyexpressthingsinsuparativeterms.
Thatswhyweusewordsintheabsolutesense--whiht.
Therightwayisalwaystoexpressiiveterms.
Forinstance,weareallsittinghereandinawayweareallawake.
Butthatsnotreallytrue.
Eaepresenthereisawaketoarespectivedegree.
Noteveryoinghereisawakeuniformly.
Heispossiblethat,paredtoyou.
thepersontoyourleftislessawake,orthepersonthtismoreawake.
Theelementthatmovesbetweensciousnessandunsciousnessisattention.
Soifweuandwhatattention,dhyanais,welluandwhatsciousnessandunsciousnessmeans.
Attentionmeans:awarenessofsomething.
Itmeansrefleofsomethinginthesciousness.
Itisnotthateverymoment,twenty-fourhoursaday,oneisequallyawake--itisneverlikethateither.
Asanexample,itwouldbegoodtoknowafewthingsaboutthepupiloftheeye.
Whenyougooutinthesun,thepupiltractsbecausethereisnoneedforsomuchlighttogoin.
Lesslightisenoughforyoutosee;hehepupiltradthefocusisnarrowed.
Whenyoueouthtlightintoadarkplace,thepupilsdilateandthefocusisenlarged,becauseioseeinthedark,mhtogowithin.
Soacctothedegreeofdarknessandlightitisexposedto,thepupiloftheeyekeepsgingitsfocus--thesamewaywekeepadjustingthefocusofthecameralenswhileshootingpictures.
Justaseverymomentoneseyeisflexible,soisoention.
Youwalkalongastreet.
Ifthestreetisfamiliaryourattentionwillbetenuous;ifthestreetisunfamiliaryourattentionwillbedense.
Youbealertifitisastreetyoucrosseveryday,becauseinanunsciousstateyouaresuretomakeit.
Ifthestreetistotallyunfamiliar,oneyouhavenevercrossedbefore,youwillcrossitwithawareness.
Becauseoftheunfamiliarityofthestreet,greatattentionwillbeneeded.
Hehemoreamanlivesinsecurity,themoreunscioushewillbe.
Insecurityeverythingisknown,familiar.
Themoreonelivesininsecurity,themoreawarehewillbe.
Soordinarily,exceptforthemomentsofdanger,weareneveraware,wearealwaysasleep.
IfIsuddenlypointadaggeratyourchest,youwillbeealertatonce.
Youwillbeescious,awake,quitedifferentfromwhatyouarenow.
Seeingthedaggerpoiyouwillcreatesuemergency,suchacriticalsituation,thatatthatmomentyoutaffordtobeasleep.
Thatmeansyoutbesleepyinsuent.
Ifyoustaysleepyinsuchadangeroussituationyouwillbeneardeath.
Inthatthreateningmomentyourwholebeingwilletothepointofcrystallization,yourwholeattentionwillbeedensed.
Yourwholeattentionwillremaihedaggerandyouwillbeefullyawareofit.
Itispossiblethissituationmaylastonlyforased;heless,thefactis,yourattentionordinarilybeesdenseonlyincritients.
Ohedangerisover,yougobacktoyourpreviousstate,yougotosleeponceagain.
Thatseemstobethereasondaracts.
Welovetotakerisks.
Amangambles,forexample.
Youmayhavehardlygivenathoughtastowhatmakeshimgamble.
Itistheelementofdahatdrawshimtogambling.
Atthemomentofplaghisbet,heismoreawarethanever.
Agamblerhasplacedahuhousanddollarsoandisabouttothrowthedice.
Itsaverycritient.
Inablink,ahuhousanddollarsgothiswayorthat.
Atthismomentheotaffordtobeasleep;hewillhavetobeaware.

Then,asthedaysgobyandshebeoreandmorefamiliar,hebeeslessateowardsher.
Shebeesaswellknowntohimasthestreethecrosseseveryday--andsuddenlythewomadoorlooksmoreattractive.
Thereasonisnothingmorethathatherunfamiliarityexciteshisattention.
Lookingather,hisattentionhastobeedehefocusofhiseyegesimmediately.
Actually,theeyesofhusbandsandwivesdontgefocuswhentheylookateachother.
Infact,ahusbandhardlyeverlooksathiswife;heavoidsher.
Thewayhelivesandmovesaroundherdoesntrequirehimtopayanyattentiontoher.
Henmyview,theattraforanotherwomanoranothermanisreallytheattraofattention.
Inthatonemoment,inthatmomentofthrill,themindbeesfullyaware.
Ithasto--becauseonlythenisitpossibletoseesomebody.
Thereisachasegoingon--tohaveanewhouseinsteadoftheold,newclothesinsteadoftheold,newpositionsinsteadoftheold.
Deepdown,allthischasingindicatesaprofounddesiretoexperienceacrystallizedattentioation.
Andallthejoysinoneslifedependonhowcrystallizedthemeditationis.
Themomentsofblissarethemomentsofcrystallizedmeditation.
Hence.
thosewhowishtoattainjoymustawaken.
Youotattainjoybystayingasleep.
Religionisaseareditation,andsoisgambling.
Onewhogoestobattle,swordinhand,isinseareditationtoo.
Onewhogoeshuntingatigerintheforestisalsoseargformeditation.
Andtheonewhoissittinginthecavewithhiseyesclosed,whardonhisagyachakra,histhirdeyeter,isseargformeditationaswell.
Thesearbebothgoodorbad,desirableorundesirable,butthesearchisohesame.
Asearchmaybesuccessfulorunsuccessful,butthedesireforseargisohesame.
Meditationmeans:thepowerofknowingthatlieswithinyoubeaiirety.
Nopartofitshouldremaiwithinyou,inseedform.
Whatsoevercapabilityofknowingyouhaveshouldnotremainjustapotential,itshouldbeeactual.
Onlyinthatmomentapersonbeesfullyawaredoeshereallyflowerasabeing.
Botheventsoccursimultaneously.
Forexample,atreeishiddeninaseed,butpotentially.
Itisjustapotentiality:theseeddiewithoutmaterializingintothetree.
Itisnotnecessarythatthetreehastoeoutoftheseed,itissimplyapossibility.
Itisonlyapotentiality,anactuality.
Thelaterturningoftheseedintoatreeisyetaateofitsbeing,themaate.
Itwouldnotbewrongtosaythattheseedistheunmaateofthetree,becauseearsintheformofatreeisthesameaswashiddenwithintheseed.
Followingthesameanalogy,itwouldnotbeincorrecttosaythatunsciousnessisthepotentialstateofawareness,orthatawarenessisthemaateofunsciousness.
Whatisitthatmovesbetweeates?Whatresentintheseedandalsoexistsiree?Theremustbeaegliweentheseedaree.
Theremustbesomethingthatmakesthejourneyfromtheseedtothetree,thatexistsinboth.
Howelsetherebeaebetweentheseedaree?Whatwashiddenintheseedandhasmaediree?Iteitherbetheseednoritbethetree.
Thisobeuood.
Thethirdpowerthatwashiddenintheseedandwhichbecamemaireecouldnothavebeentheseedalone.
Thenitcouldneverhavebeethetree.
Andifitwerethetreealone,howcouldithavebeenintheseed?Itexistedinboth.
Thatthirdpoweristhevitalenergy.
Awakeningandunsciousnessaretwostates.
Theelementthattravelsbetweewoismeditation.
Thatsthethirdforce,thevitalenergy.
So,themoremeditativeyouare,themoreaware;thelessmeditative,themoreasleep.
ArockisasleepingGod--totallyasleep,absolutelylikeaseed,nosproutinganywhere.
Manisnotatree,heisabrokehatinysprout.
Hehasbeeatree,butheisnolongerlikearockeither.
Heisonajourneysomewhereiween.
Manisonajourney--oritwouldbeeveertosaythatmanisintransit,atahaltingplaajourney.
Manisaseedonitswaytobeingatree.
Heisalsoasproutiween.
Thatsallmanis--asprout,asproutedseed.
Whatweordinarilyknowasbeingawakeisalsojustasprouting.
Whatwecallbeingawakeisalsoaveryblurrystate.
Whatwecallbeingawakeisstillaverysleepystate.
Thewakefulstateinwhichwegoaboutourdailyroutineisnotverydifferentfromthestateofsomnambulism.
Inadream,amasup,goestothekitanddrinksaglassofwater,orsitsathistableandwritesaletter,andthengoesbacktosleep.
Heremembersnothingofthisinthem,hediditallinthedream.
Hiseyeswereopen,hefollowedtherightpath,opehedoorwithoutdifficulty,wrotetheletter,butstillhewasasleep.
Thismeansthat,exceptforatinylittleer,hisentiremindwasasleep,andhencecoulderhisasinitsmemory.
Sothemanisatalossinthemtoexplainpenight.
Whatwecallbeingawakeisastatesimilartosomnambulism.

Ithasallthatsuattemptwasalreadymadeoncebefore.
Asamatteroffafiemptshavebeenmadebefore.
Shouldyouevereothememoriesofyourpastlives,youwillbeinfreatsurprise.
Thememoriesofpastlivesarerictedtohumanlivesalone.
Enteringthesememoriesisveryeasy;onedosowithoutmuchdifficulty.
However,priortomanyhumanlives,assedthroughanimallivesaswell.
Itisdifficulttopeethembecausetheyarehiddenunderevendeeperlayers.
Andevenpriortoouranimallives,wehavelivedthroughmanylivesastreesaswell.
Peingthemisevenmoredifficultbecausetheyareburiedevenfurther,atdeeperlevels.
Priortohavinglivedastrees,wehavegohroughmanylivesasrodminerals.
Memoriesoftheselieatevenlowerlevels.
Accesstothemisevenmoredifficult.
Uptonow,experimentsinrememberingpastliveshavenotgonebeyondthelevelofanimallife.
EventheexperimentscarriedonbyBuddhaandMahaviradidnotgobeyondthelevelofanimallife.
Thememoryofbeingatreeisyettoberevived.
Asforthememoryofbeingrodminerals,itisstillfurtherdowntheroad.
Butthememoriesofallthesepastlivesareclearlyrecorded.
Thisrec,however,musthavetakenplaastateofsomnoleherwiseoiremindwouldbeawareofit.
Itmaynothaveoccurredtoyou,buttherearecertainthingsweneverfet.
Whyisitso?Forexample,letsassumesomeoneslappedyouwhenyouwerefiveyearsold.
Evenaftersomaheiisstillfreshinyourmind,andyouwillneverfetitfortherestofyourlife.
Whatseemstobethematter?Atthemomentyouwereslapped,yourattentionmusthavebeenverysharp.
Thatswhytheimadesuchadeepimpressiononyou.
Itisonlynaturalthatatthemomentoneisslapped,oentionwouldbeatitshighestpoint.
Thisisthereasonmaneverfetthemomentsofinsult,themomentsofpain,themomentsofhappiness.
Theseareallintensemoments.
Inthesemomentsheissofilledwithawarehattheirmemorypervadeshisentiresciousness,whiletheordinaryrun-of-the-millhappeningsarefottenbyhim.
Howarewetouandwhatattentionis,whatmeditationis?Becauseitisanexperieouanditisabitdifficult.
IfIweretostickapininyourbodywhatwouldhappeninside?Allyourattentionwouldatoorushtothepoihepinhadstuckyou.
Allofasuddenthatpointinthebodywouldbeesignifit.
Oneshouldsay,rather,yourwholebeingwouldvergeuponit.
Atthatmomentyouwouldonlyremainawareofthatpartofthebodywherethepinwashurting.
Sowhatreallydidocyourbody?Evenwithoutthepinthatpartofyourbodywasthere,butyouwerenotawareofit,notizantofit;youdidntevenknowsuchapartexisted.
Andthen,suddenly,thepaincausedbythepiedacrisisandyourwholeattentionrushedtowherethepinwashurting.
Whatisitthatrushedtowardsthatpoint?penedinsideyou?Howarethingsdifferentnow?Whatisitthatwasnotpresentatthatpointamomentago,butnowis?Itisthesciousheawarehatwasabsentfromthispointamomentago.
Itsabsencemadeyousooblivioustothatpartofthebodythatwhetheritexistedornotwasallthesame.
Youhadnoknowledgeofit;itmadelittlediffereheritwasthereornot.
Suddenlyyoubecameawarethatpartalsoexistsinyourbody.
Suddenlyitmakesalotofdiffereheritexistsornot.
Nowitsexistentialawarenessbeesapparenttoyou.
So,attentionmeansawareness.
Therebetwokindsofattention.
Thisalsoobeuood,becauseitwillbeusefulinfollowingyourquestion.
Therearetwokindsofattention.
One,wemaycalltration.
Iouandwhattrationis,itisnecessarytoknowthatwhenyourattentioeredononepoint,youbeeoblivioustoallotherpoints.
AsImentionedearlier,ifapinisthrustintoyourbody,youreentionwillgotothepoihepinishurting.
Youwillbeeunawareoftherestofthebody.
Infact,asickpersonremainsawareonlyofthosepartsofhisbodywhicharenotwell.
Hebeginstoliveonlyinandaroundtheafflictedpartsofhisbody;therestofthebodydoesforhimanymore.
Onewhosuffersfromaheadachebeesidentifiedwiththeheadaloherestofhisbodyceasestobe.
Onewhosestomachhurts,hiswholeattentioersonlyoomach.
Ifathornpricksyourfoot,thefootbeeseverything.
Thisistrationofattention.
Thisishowyallyoursciousoonepoint.
Wheiresciousnessvergesononepointahere,obviouslyallotherpointsbeeed,disappearintodarkness.
AsIpoiearlier,whensomeoneshouseisonfire,hebeesoblivioustoeverythingbutthefire.
Heonlyknowshishouseisonfire;everythingelseisdeadasfarasheised.
Theonlythingheremainsawareofisthathishouseisonfire.
Hebeesunscioustowardstherestoftheworld.
So,trationisoneformofattention.
Intrationyoubeeteredononepointwhileremainingunsciousoftheinfinitenumberofotherareas.
Hehoughtrationisthedensityofattention,atthesametimeitistheexpansionofunsciousoo.
Boththingshappensimultaneously.
Theotherformofattentionisawareness--nottration.
Awarenessmeansattentionwhiotteredonanyparticularpoint.
Thisisalittledifficulttouand,becauseweonlyknowthepoiention.
Amanknowsaboutthethornhurtinghisfoot,theheadache,thehouseohetakingofanexaminationandsoon,soweknowattentioedtowardsaparticularpoint;weknowwhattrationis.
Butthereisoherkindofattentionwhiotfocusedonagivenpoint.
Aslongasamansattentionisnarroweddoarticularpoint,hewillbeunsciousoftheremainingareas.
IfwebelieveGodis,theindeedbeanawakenedGod,fullyaware.
Butwhatwouldhebeawareof?Andshouldtherebeapointofwhichheisaware,thenhewouldobviouslyhavetobeunsciousofalltherest.
SotheretbeanyobjeyterofawarenessasfarasGodised.
Itsanawarenesswithoutater.
Insuchacase,awarenessbeesinfinite,allpervading.
Thisall-pervadingawarenessistheultimatestate,thehighestpossible.
ThatsedefineGodassat-chit-anand,thewordchitmeansthisstateofbeing.
Ordinarily,peopletakechittomeaana,sciousness,whiotreallyitsmeaning,becausesciousnessisalwaysaboutsomething.
Ifyousay,"Iamscious,"thenitbeasked,"sciousaboutwhat?"Chitmeansobjectlesssciousness.
Itisnotsciousnessaimedatsomething,itisjustapurestateofbeingscious.
sciousnesswillalwaysbeobject-tered,whilethestateofbeingsciousistrifugal,radiatingintoinfinity.

Nomatterhowsignifittheansweris,themindwillimmediatelyraisedozensofquestions--butiteverfindanaoanything.
Thereisareasonforthis:theanswerliesinthewholeness.
Butthemindishelpless.
Ittfunwithoutmakingdivisions.

Youarelisteningtomeandyouarealsolookingatme.
Theoneyouarelookingatandtheoneyouarelisteningtoarenottwodifferentindividuals.
However,asfarasyouareed,youarelookingwithyoureyesandhearingwithyourears.
Youhavedividedmeintotwoparts.
Ifyouweretositclosetomeandsmellmybody,youwouldhavedividedmeintothree.
Thenyouwillputthesethreepartstogetheraeanimageofme.
Butthatwontbemyimage,itwillbeyouradditionoftheparts.
Itwillbemisleading.
Youevercreatethewholebyaddinguptheparts,becausethewholeisthatwhichwasbeforethepartsweremade.
Nosoonerdoweaskaboutsciousnessandunscioushanwehavebeguntodivide.
Inmyview,theyareone.
ButwhenIsaytheyareone,Idoheyareohesame.
Iamnotsayingsciousselfisunsciousness.
WhenIsaydarknessandlightareone,Idontmeanyouwalkinthedarkasyoudowhenthereislight.

Themoreprofoueofattention,thesamewillbethesciousness.
Themoretenuoustheattention,thesamewillbethestateofunsciousness.
Infact,thediffereweenarodahumanisthattherockdoesnothavedensityofattentionatanylevelofsciousness.
Atwhateverleveltheattentionbeesdensed,sciousakespladatwhateverlevelthedensityofattentiondecreases,unsciousnessoccurs.
Ifyouletthesunsrayspassthroughalens,fireisimmediatelyproduced.
Adensedlightcreatesfire.
Whenitlosesitsdensity,whenitbeestenuous,lightremains.
Thereisfireinanemberbecauseittainshighlydensedlight.
Wheneverlightisdensed,fireisproduced.
Whenthelightbeestenuous--thatis,whenitsdensityisreduced--thenevenfireremainsjustlight.
Asdensitydecreasesdarknessincreases.
Withanincreaseiy,lightincreases.

Hehemoreamanlivesinsecurity,themoreunscioushewillbe.
Insecurityeverythingisknown,familiar.
Themoreonelivesininsecurity,themoreawarehewillbe.
Soordinarily,exceptforthemomentsofdanger,weareneveraware,wearealwaysasleep.
IfIsuddenlypointadaggeratyourchest,youwillbeealertatonce.
Youwillbeescious,awake,quitedifferentfromwhatyouarenow.
Seeingthedaggerpoiyouwillcreatesuemergency,suchacriticalsituation,thatatthatmomentyoutaffordtobeasleep.
Thatmeansyoutbesleepyinsuent.
Ifyoustaysleepyinsuchadangeroussituationyouwillbeneardeath.
Inthatthreateningmomentyourwholebeingwilletothepointofcrystallization,yourwholeattentionwillbeedensed.
Yourwholeattentionwillremaihedaggerandyouwillbeefullyawareofit.
Itispossiblethissituationmaylastonlyforased;heless,thefactis,yourattentionordinarilybeesdenseonlyincritients.
Ohedangerisover,yougobacktoyourpreviousstate,yougotosleeponceagain.
Thatseemstobethereasondaracts.

Meditationmeans:thepowerofknowingthatlieswithinyoubeaiirety.
Nopartofitshouldremaiwithinyou,inseedform.
Whatsoevercapabilityofknowingyouhaveshouldnotremainjustapotential,itshouldbeeactual.
Onlyinthatmomentapersonbeesfullyawaredoeshereallyflowerasabeing.
Botheventsoccursimultaneously.
Forexample,atreeishiddeninaseed,butpotentially.
Itisjustapotentiality:theseeddiewithoutmaterializingintothetree.
Itisnotnecessarythatthetreehastoeoutoftheseed,itissimplyapossibility.
Itisonlyapotentiality,anactuality.
Thelaterturningoftheseedintoatreeisyetaateofitsbeing,themaate.
Itwouldnotbewrongtosaythattheseedistheunmaateofthetree,becauseearsintheformofatreeisthesameaswashiddenwithintheseed.
Followingthesameanalogy,itwouldnotbeincorrecttosaythatunsciousnessisthepotentialstateofawareness,orthatawarenessisthemaateofunsciousness.

Atthatmomentyouwouldonlyremainawareofthatpartofthebodywherethepinwashurting.

Wheiresciousnessvergesononepointahere,obviouslyallotherpointsbeeed,disappearintodarkness.
AsIpoiearlier,whensomeoneshouseisonfire,hebeesoblivioustoeverythingbutthefire.
Heonlyknowshishouseisonfire;everythingelseisdeadasfarasheised.
Theonlythingheremainsawareofisthathishouseisonfire.
Hebeesunscioustowardstherestoftheworld.
So,trationisoneformofattention.
Intrationyoubeeteredononepointwhileremainingunsciousoftheinfinitenumberofotherareas.
Hehoughtrationisthedensityofattention,atthesametimeitistheexpansionofunsciousoo.
Boththingshappensimultaneously.
Theotherformofattentionisawareness--nottration.
Awarenessmeansattentionwhiotteredonanyparticularpoint.
Thisisalittledifficulttouand,becauseweonlyknowthepoiention.
Amanknowsaboutthethornhurtinghisfoot,theheadache,thehouseohetakingofanexaminationandsoon,soweknowattentioedtowardsaparticularpoint;weknowwhattrationis.
Butthereisoherkindofattentionwhiotfocusedonagivenpoint.
Aslongasamansattentionisnarroweddoarticularpoint,hewillbeunsciousoftheremainingareas.
IfwebelieveGodis,theindeedbeanawakenedGod,fullyaware.
Butwhatwouldhebeawareof?Andshouldtherebeapointofwhichheisaware,thenhewouldobviouslyhavetobeunsciousofalltherest.
SotheretbeanyobjeyterofawarenessasfarasGodised.
Itsanawarenesswithoutater.
Insuchacase,awarenessbeesinfinite,allpervading.
Thisall-pervadingawarenessistheultimatestate,thehighestpossible.
ThatsedefineGodassat-chit-anand,thewordchitmeansthisstateofbeing.
Ordinarily,peopletakechittomeaana,sciousness,whiotreallyitsmeaning,becausesciousnessisalwaysaboutsomething.
Ifyousay,"Iamscious,"thenitbeasked,"sciousaboutwhat?"Chitmeansobjectlesssciousness.
Itisnotsciousnessaimedatsomething,itisjustapurestateofbeingscious.
sciousnesswillalwaysbeobject-tered,whilethestateofbeingsciousistrifugal,radiatingintoinfinity.
