  Beingunsciouswhenoneisinmiserymeansonehasidentifiedoneselfwiththemisery.

  Whenyouhaveaheadache,youdontfeelanydistaweentheheadadyourself;youdontremainjustadistantwatcher.

  Rather,youfeelasifyouareinpain.

  Whenyouhaveafever,itdoeshoughthebodyishot,somewhereatadistanyou,insteadyoufeelasifyouhavebeehot.

  Thisisidentification.

  Whenyourfootishurtandwounded,youdontfeeljusttheaffectedfoot;rather,youfeelasifyouarehurtandwounded.

  Basically,wedontfeelanydistaweenourselvesandourbodies.

  Weliveidentifiedwiththebody.

  Whenhungerarises,osayhisbodyishungryandheisawareifit,insteadhesays,"Iamhungry.

  "Butthisisnotthetruth.

  Thetruthis,thebodyishungryandheisawareofit.

  Heissimplytheterofawareness--tinuouslyawareofwhatsoeverishappening.

  Ifthereisathornhurti,heknowsit;ifthereisaheadache,heknowsit;ifthestomaeedsfood,heknowsit.

  Manissciousness,sciousnesswhichistinuouslyaware.

  Heisnottheexperiencer,heissimplytheknower.

  Thisisthereality.

  Butourstateofmindisnotthatofthekisthatoftheexperiencer.

  Whenthekurnsiheexperiencer;whenheknowsnot,butratherbeesidentifiedwiththeactitself;whenhedoesnotremainawitnesswatgfromadistaratherbeesthepartiti,thatiswhentheidentificationtakesplace.

  Thenhebeesohtheact.

  Thisidentificatioshimfromwakingup,becauseiobeawake,iobeaware,acertaindistanceisrequired,aspaeeded.

  Iamabletoseeyouonlybecausethereisadistaweenyouandme.

  Ifthewholedistaweenyouandmeweretoberemoved,Iwouldntbeabletoseeyou.

  Iamabletoseeyoubecausethereisaspacebetweenus.

  Ifthisentirespaceweresomehowelimiwouldntbepossibleformetoseeyou.

  Withioo,therewasadistaweentheelementthatwatchesandhisbody.

  HenceJesusalsodidntcryout,"Dontkillme!"

  Mansoorslimbsutatedalaughing.

  Whensomeoneaskedhim,"Whatmakesyoulaughwhenyourlimbsarebeingcutoff7"Mansoorsaid,"Iwouldhavecriedhadyoudismemberedme,butitisnotmeyouarechoppingoff;theoneyouaredoingitto,youfools,isnotme.

  IlaughatyoubecauseyouaretakingthisbodytobeMansoors,justasyoutakethebodiesyouareintobeyourauthenticselves.

  Youwillobviouslysufferpainfuldeaths.

  Whatyouaredoingtomeisnothingbutarepetitionofthemistakesyouhaveittediingyourownselves.

  Hadyoubeenawareyouareseparatefromyourbodies,youwouldnthavetriedtocutmybody.

  Youwouldhaveknownthatyouandyourbodyaretwodifferentthings.

  Thenyouwouldhaverealizedthatbycuttingupthebody,Mansoorisnotcut.

  "

  Thegreatestpreparatioerihinasciousstateistofirstenterpainsciously,becausedeathdoesnotoccuroften,itdoesnoteeveryday.

  Deathwilleonlyonce,whetheryouarepreparedforitornot;thereotbearehearsalfordeath.

  Butpainandmiseryeeveryday.

  repareourselveswhilegoingthroughpainandsuffering--andremember,ifwedosowhilefagthem,itwillproveusefulatthetimeofdeath.

  Hence,seekershavealwaysweledsuffering.

  Thereisnootherreasonforit.

  Itisnotthatsufferingisagoodthing.

  Thereasonissimplythatsufferingprovidestheseekerortunityforself-preparation,self-attai.

  AseekerhasalwaysthankedGodforthesufferingheundergoes,forthesimplereasonthat,isofmisery,hegetsacetodisidentifyhimselffromhisbody.

  Remember,sadhana,spiritualdiscipline,isalittledifficulttofollowwhenyouarehappy.

  Itiseasierwhenyouaremiserable,becauseisofhappinessowanttohaveeventheslightestfeelingofseparationfromonesbody.

  Whenyouarehappythebodyfeelsverydeartoyou;youdontfeellikebeiachedfromitforevenaninch.

  Isofhappinesswemoveclosertothebody;heisnotsurprisingthataseekerofhappinessbeesamaterialist.

  Itisalsonotsurprisingifapersonwhoistinuouslyseekinghappinessbelieveshimselftobenothingmorethanhisbody,becauseinhappytimeshebegilikeagreenutinsteadofadryohedistaweenhimandhisbodytionarrowdown.

  Isofpainonewisheshewerenotthebody.

  Ordinarily,amanwhotakeshimselftobenothingbutthebodyalsowisheshewerenotthebodywhenhisheadhurtsorwhenhisfootisinjuredorwhenhisbodyaches.

  Hetendstoagreewithmonksallovertheworldwhogoaboutsayingthat,"ItwouldhavebeeerifIwerenotthebody.

  "Feelingthepaininhisbody,hebeeseagertosomehowfindoutheisnotthebodytoo.

  ThatswhyIsaytoyou,themomentsofpainbeomentsofspiritualdiscipliheybeturomomentsofsadhana.

  Butordinarily,whatdowedo?

  Ordinarily,duringtimesofsufferietpain.

  Ifamanisintrouble,hewilldrinkalcohol.

  Someoneisinpainandhewillgoandsitinamovietheater.

  Somebodyismiserableandhewilltrytethismiserywithprayersaionalsongs.

  Thesearealldifferentwaysaetpain.

  Someonedrinks;wesaythisisoieonegoesandwatchesamovie,thisisanother.

  Apersooacert;thisisathirdwayettingpain.

  Somebodygoestothetempleanddrownshimselfinprayersandhymns;thisisafourthstrategy.

  Therebeathousandarategies--theybereligious,nious,orsecular.

  Thatsnotabigquestion.

  Underhallthis,thebasigisthatmanwantstethismisery.

  Heisintettingmisery.

  Apersonwhoisouttetmiseryevertomisery.

  Howwebeeawareofsomethiendtet?Onlywithanattitudeofrememberingwebeeawareofsomething.

  Henlybyrememberingpainwebeeawareofit.

  Sowheneveryouareiakeitasanopportunity.

  Betotallyawareofit,andyouwillhaveawonderfulexperience.

  Whenyoubeefullyawareofyoursuffering,whenyoulookatitfacetofaotesgthepain,youwillhaveaglimpseofyourseparatenessfromit.

  Forexample,youfell,wereinjured,hurtyourfoot.

  Nowtrytolocatethepainirytopinpointtheexactspotwhereithurts,andyouwillbeastoodiscoverhowyouhavemaospreadthepainoveramuchwiderarea,awayfromtheinalspotwhereitsiyisnotsomuch.

  Manexaggerateshissuffering.

  Hemagnifieshismisery,whieveractuallythatmuch.

  Thereasonbehindthisisthesame--identificationwiththebody.

  Miseryisliketheflameofalamp,butweexperieasthedispersedlightofthelamp.

  Miseryisliketheflame,limitedtoaverysmallseofthebody.

  Butwefeelitliketheveryextendedlightofthelamp,camuchlargerarea.

  Closeyoureyesandtrytolocatethepainfrominside.

  Remembertoo,wehavealwaysknownthebodyfromtheoutside,neverfromwithin.

  Evenifyouknowyourbody,itisknownasothersseeit.

  Ifyouhaveseenyourhand,itisalwaysfromtheoutside,butyoufeelyourhandfromwithintoo.

  Itisasifooremaintehseeinghishouseonlyfromtheoutside.

  Butthereisaninnersidetothehouseaswell.

  Painoccursattheinnerpartsofthebody.

  Thepoihurtsislocatedsomewhereieriorofthebody,butthepaiotheouterpartsofthebody.

  Itislikethis:theflameofpainislocatedinside,whilethelightradiatesoutward.

  Sinceweareusedtoseeingthebodyfromoutside,thepaiobeveryspreadout.

  Itisawonderfulexperieryingtoseethebodyfrominside.

  Closeyoureyesandtrytofeelandexperiethebodyislikefromwithin.

  Thehumanbodyhasaninnerwalltoo;ithasaninnercaswell.

  Thisbodyhasaninnerlimittoo.

  Thatinnerfrontiercertainlybeexperiehclosedeyes.

  Youhaveseenyourhandlifting.

  Now,closeyoureyessometimeandliftyourhand,andyouwillexperiehehandrisingfromwithin.

  Fromtheoutsideyouhaveknownwhatitistobehungry.

  Closeyoureyesandexperiengerfromwithin,andforthefirsttimeyouwillbeabletofeelitfrominside.

  Assoonasyougetholdofthepainfromwithin,twothingshappen.

  Ohepairemainaswidelyspreadasitinallyseemedtobe;itimmediatelytersonasmallpoint.

  Andthemoreintenselyyoutrateonthispoint,themoreyouwillfinditbeingsmallerandsmaller.

  Andanincrediblethinghappens.

  Whenthepointbeesverysmall,youfindtoyouramazementitappearsanddisappears,goesoffandon.

  Gapsbegintoappeariween.

  Andfinally,whenitdisappears,youwonderpeoit.

  Manytimesyoumissit.

  Thepointbeessosmall,thatoftehesciousriestolocateit,itisnotthere.

  Justaspainexpandsinastateofunsciousness,ieofawarenarrowsdownandbeessmall.

  Insuchastateofscioushefeelingwillbethatalthoughyouhavegohroughsomanypainfulexperiences,althoughyouhavelivedthroughsomuchsufferi,infact,themiserieswerenotreallythatmany.

  Wehavesufferedexaggeratedpains.

  Thesameistruewithregardtohappiness.

  Thehappinesseswehavebeenthroughwerenotasmanyastheyseemedtobe;wehaveeheminanexaggeratedformtoo.

  Ifooenjoyoneshappinesswithawareness,wewouldfindthathappinessbeesverysmalltoo.

  Ifweweretolivethroughmiserywiththesamekindofawareness,wewouldfinditbeesverynarrowaswell.

  Thegreatertheawarehenarrowerandsmallerthepainsandmiseries.

  Theybeesosmallthat,inadeeperseheyturnouttobemeaningless.

  Infact,theirmeaniheirexpansion.

  Theyseemtobeenpassiirelife.

  However,whehroughgreatawareheygoonnarrowingdown,ultimatelybeingsomeaniheydonthaveanythingtodowithlifeassuch.

  Thesedthingthatwillhappenis,whenyoulookatyourmiseryveryclosely,adistancewillbecreatedbetweenyouandthemisery.

  Infact,wheneveryoulookatathing,immediatelyadistanceiscreatedbetweenyouahingitself.

  Seeingcausesthedistance.

  Nomatterwhatwelookat,adistanceimmediatelybeginstotakeplace.

  Ifyoulookcloselyatyourmisery,youwillfindaseparatioweenthemiseryandyou,becauseonlythatwhichisseparatefromyoubeseen.

  Obviously,thatwhichisinseparablyohyouotbeseen.

  Onewhoisawareofhismisery,onewhoisfilledwithsciousness,onewhoisfullofremembrance,experiehemiseryassomewhereelse,andheissomewhereatadistance.

  Thedayamaorealizethediffereweenhimselfandthemisery,assoonasheestoknowhispainishappeningsomewhereatadistaheunsciousnesscausedbymiseryceasestoexist.

  Andonceapersoouandthatthesufferingsaswellasthehappihebodyoccurelsewhere,thatoneismerelyakhem,hisidentitywiththebodyissevered.

  Thenheknowsheisnotthebody.

  Thisistheinitialpreparation.

  Ohispreparationisplete,thenitiseasytoenterdeathwithawareness.

  Notonlyeasy,butitwillhappenmostcertainly.

  Assuch,wearenotafraidofdeathreally.

  Afterall,eventobeafraidofdeath,oobefamiliarwithdeath.

  Howwefeelafraidofsomethingweknownothingabout?

  So,wehavenofearofdeathreally;rather,inourmihexistsintheformofadisease.

  Thatstheideawehaveofit.

  Whenevenminorillnessesleaveusinsomuchtrouble--thefoothurtsandwesuffersomuch,theheadhurtsandwesuffersomuch--whatatortureitwillbewheirebodywillhurtandfallapart!

  Thefearofdeathisthesumtotalofallourillnesses.

  Deathinitself,however,isnotanillness.

  Deathhasnothingtodowithillness--itisnoteveelyectedwithit.

  Itisadifferentmatterifillnessesprecededeath,butthereisnocause-and-effectrelationshipbetweewo.

  Itisbesidethepointthatamandiesfollowinganillness,butobemistakenandthinkthatillnesscausesdeath.

  Perhapsthereverseisthecase.

  Becauseamanesclosetodeath,hegrabsontoillness.

  Nooneeverdiesofillness.

  Asdeathapproaches,hebeginstocatchillnesses.

  Asdeathdrawsnear,hisbodybeesweak,hisreceptivitytowardssiessincreases.

  Hebeesvulnerable,hebeginstolookforillnesses.

  Thesameillnesswouldnotbeabletoaffecthimwerethemanclosertolife.

  Perhapsitwouldnothavebeeocatchholdofhim.

  Doyouknowtherearesomemomentswhenyouaremorereceptivetoillnesses,whiletherearesomewhenyouarenot?Isofdisappoiandsadnessapersonbeesvulnerabletoillness,whileamanfullofhopeandoptimismbeesuivetoit.

  Evenillnessdoeseryouwithoutyourwillioacceptit--yourinneracceptaneeded.

  Henatterhowmanymediesaregiventothem,thosewhoareofasuicidalmindeverbecured.

  Theirmindsremaiivetomedications.

  Theirmindsgoonseekingillnesses,invitingdiseaseswithopenarms,butkeepingtheirdoorsverytightlyclosedasfarasmedicationsareed.

  No,nooneeverdiesofillness.

  Rather,onebeesvulnerabletoillnessesbecauseofapproagdeath.

  Thatswhyillnessoccursfirst,thehfollows.

  Wenormallythinkpensfirstisthecause,andthatwhichfollowsitistheeffect.

  Thatserrohinking.

  Illnessisnotthecause.

  Invariablythecauseisdeath.

  Theillnessismerelytheeffect.

  Sothefearofdeathinourmindsisreallythefearofillness.

  Firstofall,wecreatethefearofdeathbyaddingupallourillnesses.

  Thesedthingworthrememberingisthatallthepeoplewehaveseendying,wehavenotreallyseenthemdying,wehaveohemfallingill.

  Howweeverseeanyonedyihissuutterlyinnerphenomenon,noonebeawitoit.

  Thinktwicebeforeyouevertestifytoseeingsudsuchapersondie,becauseitisaverydifficultthingtoseesomeonedying.

  Tothisdayithasneverhappehisearth.

  Noonehaseverseenanyonedying.

  Onlythismuchhasbeenseen:amanfellill,grewmoreill,andmoreandmoreill,andonedayitbecameknownthatthemanisnolongeralive.

  Butbasically,noonehaseverseenersondied.

  Noonehaseverbeeopinpointatwhientapersondied,andwhatexactlyhappeheprocessofdying.

  Theonlythingwehaveseenisamanbeifreefromlife.

  Wehavenotseenaboattougtheothershore;wehaveoleavingthisshore.

  Wehaveseenasciousnessmoveawayfromtheshoresoflife,aeracertainpointwehavelostsightofit.

  Thebodythatremainswithusisnolongeralive,asitwasuntilyesterday,andsowethinkthemanisdead.

  Forus,deathisaninfereisnotahathtbeforeus.

  Wehaveseensickpeople,wehaveseenthesufferingofadyingman--thecrampingofhislimbs,hiseyesrollingup,hisfacedef,hisjawsg;wehaveseenthatperhapsthemanwantstosaysomethingbutot--wehaveseenallthis.

  Wehavewithusthesumofallthis;ithasbeepartofourcollectivemind.

  Whatsoeverhasbeenhappeningatthetimeofdeathovermillionsofyears,wehavecollecteditall.

  Weareafraidofthat.

  Wearealshtenedoffagthesamedifficultiesatthetimeofourdeath.

  Hence,manhasdevisedveryclevermeans.

  Hehasdismissedthefactofdeathfromthewholeideaoflife.

  Wecreatecemeteriesoutsidethetownsothatwearenotremindedofdeathmoreoften.

  Really,ideallyacemeteryshouldbecreatedinthemiddleofthetown,becausethereisnothinginlifemorecertainthahitself:everythingelseisuain.

  Otherthingsmayormaynotbe.

  Theonlythingwhiebelieveindefinitivelyisdeath.

  Deathisthemostcertainthing;noonedoubtitsexistence.

  WedoubttheexistenceofGod;wedoubttheexistehesoul;wedoubtlifeitself,butthereisnowaytodoubtdeath.

  Deathis.

  Thatwhichissocertainutoutsidethetown.

  Ifafuneralpassesby,themothercallsherchildrentoeihehouse,becausesomebodyisdead.

  Actually,ifsomeoneisdeadeveryoneshouldbeaskedtoeoutsotheywatchthegreatestfactoflifepassingby.

  Everyoneisboundtopassthroughdeath.

  Thereisodenyit.

  Butwearesoscaredofdeathwedontevenwanttomentionit.

  Ihaveheard

  Anoldwomaoseeamonkandsaid.

  "Thesoulisindeedimmortal.

  "Oldpeopleoftentalkabouttheimmortalityofthesoulfornootherreasonthanthefearofdeath.

  Thatstheonlyreasonwhywefindsuchalargenumberofoldfolksintemples,mosques,churches.

  Whyarentyoungpeopleandchildreedingoingtotheseplaces?Itwillbeawhilebeforetheygetthenewsofdeath.

  Itwilltakealittletime.

  Theyaffordtodehfornow;theyfetitforawhile.

  Howoldmanfetdeath?Hegetsreminderseveryday.

  Onedayhefindshislegsrefusetowalk,anotherdayhisvisionfails,sometimeshisearslosetheirhearingpower.

  Hereceiveshintsfromallaroundthat,onebyone,partsofhisbodyseemtobegivingih.

  Nowhebeginstorushtowardsthechurch,thetemple,themosque.

  HeisnotedwithGod;hegoestheresimplytomakesurethat,eventhoughwhathehasuoodlifetobeisingtoanend,willheperishtoo?

  Itisstrasocietieswhichbelieveintheimmortalityofthesoularemhtenedofdeaththanoneswhiotbelieveinthesoulsexistence.

  Takeourtry,forexample.

  Feswehavebeenfirmbelieversintheimmortalityofthesoul.

  A,noraearthismorecowardlythanours,nopeoplearemoredeadthanweare.

  Anationwhichproclaimsthesoulisimmortalsuffersinslaveryforathousandyears.

  He!Onewondershowanationwhichdeclaresthesoulisimmortalandwhichisinhabitedbyeighthundredmillionsouls,liveinslaveryuhedominationofthreemillion.

  Thosewhobelievethesoulisimmortal,thatiteverdie,whatfeartheyhaveofbeingslaves?Whatfeartheyhaveoffightingtheenemy?Whatfeartheyhaveoffagdeathbyhanging?Howgunsandhtenthem?Butno,somethingelseisinvolvedhere.

  Believingintheimmortalityofthesoulisnotthesameasknowingtheimmortalityofthesoul.

  Believinginitisjustastrategyforerasingthefearofdeath,forfalsifyingit--thesameascreatieryoutsidethetown.

  Everydaypeopleopentheirscripturesaheteagsontheimmortalityofthesoulsothattheybeabsolutelysurethereish,sothattheycarrythehopethattheywillsurvive--sothereisoworry.

  Theyassert,"Thebodywilldie,butwewillstillsurvive!"

  Whoareyouassertingasyourexisteherthanthebody?Youhavenoknowledgeofit.

  Youannounce,"Thebodymaydie,Iwilltiolive,"aisyouhaveabsolutelynoideawhoyouareotherthanthebody!Youdontknowwhatitisthatwillsurvivewhenthebodyisnomore.

  Ifyoushouldeverreallythink,"Whoaml?"youwilletoknowthatyouknownothingaboutyourselfexceptthatyouarethebody.

  Sotheoldwomansaidtothemonk,"Ibelievethesoulisimmortal.

  Thesoulisindeedimperishable.

  Whatdoyousay?"

  Abouttheimmortalityofthesoul,themonkanswerednothing.

  Hemerelylookedatthewoman,tookherhandinhisandsaid,"Whatdoyouthinkaboutdeath?Notmuchtimeisleft.
